I’m trying to make a list of all the books we have at home so we (my family) can tell easily what books we don’t have.

This helps stop double buying.
I was thinking an online database might help, but I can’t find one that’s quick and simple to use.
Any suggestions?
(I tried in word and excel but came up with problems with united cells!!)

Excel is the answer. I do everything in Excel. It is an incredible program, but you need to spend a fair amount of time to learn its basics. Use help in Excel. It is really worth learning. My program is in French and it is not quite the same set up as yours. Click on the column line at the top to change column size. All you need is to change column size , type in the authors name and click on A-z to alphebetize them. Then type in the titles.

I created a table with multiple books with the same author in columns and then tried to alphabetise them and it said I couldn’t do it with united coloums.
I had one with author name, one with book title and then another with series title. If I had multiple books I united the first column to include all book titles. With the last column I united certain rows that were part of one series and others to another.
At the end of it all it wouldn’t A-Z.

No, it won’t do it because it is only the first column that will alphabetize. That’s why you have to put the authors in first and then add the titles. When you have new authors to add, you insert a row and place it where it should be. There is another way, but it is more complicated. Just get started and you will learn alot as you go.
