Liver failure, anyone know anything about it?

I heard something yesterday in science about paracetamol being the worst kind of thing to take because it doesn’t take much to give damage your liver, but how much? How often? Does anyone know anything about this?
How long before it kicks in? How much till its harmful? How do you repair it?

Anyone know anything?

I would talk to a doctor anyway but here you go:

Causes
Illustration showing the liver, located above the stomach The liver

Your liver is a large, multilobed organ located on the right-hand side of your abdomen.

Several common functions of your liver include:

* Filtering toxins, bacteria and waste products from your blood
* Producing many substances, including proteins that help your blood clot (clotting factors) and bile, which breaks down fats
* Storing vitamins, iron, sugar and cholesterol

When your liver fails, its ability to perform any of these functions is hampered.

Causes of acute liver failure include:

*

Drugs. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) overdose is the most common cause of acute liver failure. Many other medications, including herbal supplements such as kava extract, can cause drug reactions that lead to liver failure; however, these types of reactions are rare.

Using recreational drugs like Ecstasy and cocaine also can lead to acute liver failure.
*

Viruses. Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are the viruses that most often cause acute liver failure in the U.S., while hepatitis E is a more common cause in countries where the virus is endemic, especially among pregnant women.

Other viruses associated with acute liver failure include cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, Epstein-Barr virus, hemorrhagic fever viruses and paramyxovirus.
* Toxins. Toxins from bacteria and industrial chemicals, such as carbon tetrachloride, can damage your liver. The wild mushroom Amanita phalloides, which is sometimes mistaken for other edible species, is poisonous and causes acute liver failure.
* Autoimmune disease. Autoimmune hepatitis is a disease in which your immune system attacks liver cells, causing inflammation and injury.
* Vascular disease. Conditions that cause blockages to form in the veins of the liver can cause acute liver failure. These include portal vein thrombosis, Budd-Chiari syndrome and veno-occlusive disease.
* Metabolic disease. Rare metabolic diseases, such as Wilson’s disease, acute fatty liver of pregnancy and Reye’s syndrome infrequently cause acute liver failure.
* Cancer. Malignant tumors that grow in your liver or cancer that spreads to your liver from another organ can cause your liver to fail.

In about 15 percent of cases of acute liver failure, there’s no identifiable cause.

I know it kills in extreme cases. But don’t mind me, I’m bitter about it at the moment.

“A paracetamol overdose is particularly dangerous because the liver damage may not be obvious for four to six days after the drug has been taken. Even if someone who has taken a paracetamol overdose seems fine and doesn’t have any symptoms, it’s essential that they are taken to hospital urgently. An overdose of paracetamol can be fatal.”

Just read that on a site - thats all good but what does it class on an ‘overdose’?

Never mind :/

The recommended dose of paracetamol is 500mg to 1g every four hours. This is usually one to two tablets, but you will need to look at your packet to check how much paracetamol each tablet contains. You should take no more than four doses during a 24-hour period. Taking just twice the recommended dose could have harmful effects and would be considered an overdose.”

…ah crap

It really depends on how much you took at one time and how many times you did it.

I had to look it up as that is a different name than what I am used to seeing. Most prescription drug overdoses, such as Lortabs or Percocets, the drug itself is not what causes death but the acetaminophen/paracetamol is what kills you. It is a very serious drug to fool with, especially if you already have any kind of liver disease.

Well quit it before you do some serious damage to you body. There are other things you can do to get the adrenaline rush that you have some control over. Once you swallow that pill you no longer have any control.

If you are having problems that you need to get away from, or that are making you feel like you need to numb you really should ask for some help. I know it’s hard to ask anyone for help, trust me, I know. But sometimes we have to. Sometimes we can’t do it on our own. I’ve worked in the medical field since 1991 and I have seen what taking to much tylenol and ibuprofen can do to you. You may not see or feel the damage for years to come but it is doing damage every time you take it wrong like you are.

when I was like 18 I damaged some tissue in my neck and I started heavily using tylenol, aleve, what not. then around 22 I started drinking heavily and continued the pain pills. this is the worst combo they say. anyway I went to dr and they said I had “elevated’ liver enzymes and asked me about my drug use. I told them and they said cut it out and come back in two weeks. when I did my enzyme levels were normal. our bodies are quite resiliant, but im no dr. and everyone is different so be careful.
