Admin password
Hi, friend has a computer, and he has forgotten his password. He is the admin, and all the other accounts on the computer and the limited accounts.
Is there anyway I can get in to change it for him that doesn’t involve BIOS (his computer is really old and his BIOS is way out of date) or using OPHcrack etc as I have already tried that, but run into the same problems with the computer being so old.
Cheers

Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
im sure an admin of a website would write his password down or atleast memorise it,
http://recoveranypassword.com/recover… if you have some money you can do this..
Could you be more specific? What’s the OS?
Yeah sorry. Its Windows itself, not a website (first poster).
It’s XP, I think Professional. He can get on the other accounts on the pc, but as I said, they are all limited. I have tried Ophcrack but it won’t run (computer is extremely old, just with XP on it).
Oh, and it preferably needs to be free. I am asking around friends for an XP disk because then I could just crash the lot and start again (he doesn’t mind the stuff being lost, not much on there, mainly music).
If you can get into other accounts try this…
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
3. On the Users tab, click the name of the user account that you want to reset the password for, and then click Reset Password.
4. Type a new password in the New password box, and then type the password again in the Confirm new password box, and then click OK.
5. Restart the computer, and then try to log on to Windows XP again.
OR:
In Windows XP (not Windows Vista as Administrator account is not enabled by default), there is built-in Administrator user account, that has administrative credentials, enabled by default, and without any password to protect the account from been access. If you didn’t change this Administrator’s password, then try to sign in to Windows XP without password.
OR:
LOGON.SCR changing administrator or domain admin password hack works on Windows NT 4.0 and some versions of Windows 2000. The simple trick uses Cmd.exe as screen saver that triggered by system when idle, allowing users to access to command prompt to change password.
OR:
John the Ripper is a fast password cracker based on dictionary attack with a wordlist currently available for many flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported, not counting different architectures), Windows, DOS, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak Unix passwords. Besides several crypt(3) password hash types most commonly found on various Unix flavors, supported out of the box are Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 LM hashes, plus several more with contributed patches.
If those don’t work, lemme know and we’ll try hardware resets
Oh ALSO:
If you have two machines running the same program you can create your own windows xp setup disk! You don’t need to wait and try and find one. Do you know how to do that? If not, I know how.
The first didn’t work, according to friend (he followed steps) it came up saying you need the admin name and password to continue.
He can’t do the second one either. He can’t install stuff.
It’s gonna have to be either hardware resets or XP. I don’t know how to create a setup disk. Will I need a CD or DVD?
you’ll need a cd, a good burner, and a free download of isobuster. Actually if you’ll give me a few minutes I’m going to see if I can zip file my windows xp disk and then just email it to you. Then you won’t have to worry about it. This could take a little while, so if I’m slow to respond be patient.
You can google how to slipstream a windows disk in the meantime and it will tell you about the process. It looks difficult but I promise it isn’t.
Ok, well I know what I’m doing with a computer lol. I have Nero 7 and a 22x CD/DVD burner. Not heard of Isobuster, I’m guessing that’s used to mount the image on the disk?
Exactly. http://www.howtohaven.com/system/crea…
That should be what you need to make a bootable disk. I use isobuster but I’m sure you can use and iso burning program. I’m still fiddling with my stupid Dell to tell it what I want it to do.
I don’t have an I836 folder on my computer for some reason.
And I don’t have the original disk either (borrowed off a friend, my computer had died and my back-up disks refused to work due the boot.ini file mysteriously going missing, his disk has suffered the same problem now).
you should have an I836 folder somewhere, but it might be hidden. Have you tried making sure all your folders are visible?
Yep all folders are visible. I have found one but it is located in a folder called 7caa6ce421f9f81708831a4046 in my C:/ root folder. Is that the one I want? Contains 7 files.
I don’t think so, give me just a minute and I’ll find alternative file names
Okay thanks
Should it have files called lansetup and rtnic in it? There is 12 files altogether.
I believe so, but let me check some other things… who manufactured the computer? is it a laptop or a pc? What year was it made? What processor does it use?
My computer or my friends?
My friend’s is a desktop. I have absolutely no idea about the specs, manufacturer or year it was made, but it’s extremely old. I will try and find out but he has gone offline.
Mine is also a desktop. It’s an Acer Aspire, a T180 I believe. Bought it December 06. AMD Sempron 3200+ Processor Single Core 1.81 ghz (awful I know).
http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/#intro you can try this for creating an alternate bootable disk, different from above, although I recommend finding a downloadable i386 and using the first one. If you want to try hardware, you need to open up his desktop’s tower, and look towards the bottom where there should be a double and single switch, unhook them and then reattach them and it should start all over. This is risky, since it might remove the entire OS. This is the method used to reroute the directory during a directory removal, so it doesn’t always have desired results. You might also try removing his hard drive, attaching it to your own computer as a slave drive and wiping it clean and reinstalling it that way. You can also use utorrent or another bit torrent client to download a windows xp disk without creating one. You will still need an isoburner, cd burner, and cd for this.
I think it’s gonna have to be a reinstall. A lot less hassle really. I’ll get his data off it first running as a slave in mine. I’ll download and burn an XP disk.
Thanks for all the help :)

My Daughter has a new Acer Computer with Windows Vista,She made a Administrator password and it got changed and she don`t know the password so she can`t get back in under her account only through a guest account and then she can`t manage anything from there how could we findthe password or put a new one in there?
We can answer this if you call in on Saturday @ 1:pm- EST on SOS Computer Talk Show
www.soscomputertalk.com the Microsoft Engineer and Co-talk Show Host will walk you through changing your password.
or you can download, from any working computer/laptop Microsoft’s WinInternals ERD…
this is a bootable CD, once you have copied it to a CD RW…put it in your cd…boot from the CD…click on Tools and choose Unlock Password, change your password.
or download OPHCrack.com it is free…down load the ISO to your CDRW…this will also recover a 16 digit code key…
Or go online to :Password-changer.com (bootable CD) Cost $49.00..copy it to a CD and boot off the cd.
This is why I put my passwords under my keyboard written on a piece of paper, so if I forget my password this helps me remember it.
