Only Garth fans need pick up “The Lost Sessions”
I’ve been a Garth Brooks fan from the beginning. I thought his first album was really good, but then No Fences came out and I was hooked. That remains one of my all-time favorite albums. Not just favorite country album but among the best albums of any kind that I’ve heard.
Garth has been in self-imposed retirement from the industry for some years now so I was excited to learn he was coming out with some new music. But it turns out that The Lost Sessions isn’t strictly speaking new–these were recorded for his various other albums and for one reason or another never included.
When you listen to these tunes you can’t help but have that thought in the back of your mind–this is second-string stuff that wasn’t good enough to be included in any earlier albums. It’s the remainders, tossed together onto one CD. I’m not saying it’s bad stuff–for those of us who are fans of his work it’s worth picking up a copy. But it’s not the kind of album to win any new converts.
And what the heck is the deal with making it available only at Wal-Mart? I guess eventually it will go to other outlets but for right now it’s Wal-Mart or nothing. That seems like a bad decision, it’s thumbing his nose at all the little record stores where his music first got popular.
