One the man has been the provider of the home for many more years than women. Two most couples end up with kids and so the woman usually stays at home to take care of the house while the man works to support. It has been this way for generations. Also most men have higher paying jobs in the household.

Sorry forgot to mention but important that there is still a prejudice that exists in the hiring process as men are picked more often then women for CEO and big business opportunities.
