hey can anyone help with a math question and the working out?
??
It is: “A woman is y2 (squared) years old and her daughter is y years old. If the woman lives to the age of 13y, her daughter will be y2 years old. How old is the daughter right now?

I got 7 at first but then i started thinking that i didnt square anything so i dnt think 7 is right.
Ok i think it would be the woman is y2(years squared) and (13years(2)=she lives to be 169, and so that means the daughter would be 13 right now. this is as far as i got so really dnt think there is enough stuff to come up with a logical answer.

The hardest part was figuring out what it was asking.. or what the trick to it was.
At first I was completely confused and figured you could plug in any number for Y…
so I tried that to see what happened…
i said y = 6.
daughter = y , woman = y^2
daughter = 6 , woman = 36… easy enough
then later on
daughter = y^2, woman = 13*y
daughter = 36 , woman = 78
Why this doesnt work is the woman went from 36 to 78 (32 years) in same time as daughter went from 6 to 36 (30 years). This helped me see that the other constraint I was missing that between y^2 and 13*y must equal the difference between y and y^2. Stating the obvious but.. they must constantly have the same age difference between them.
with this I just setup the equation
womans change in years = daughters change in years
13*y - y^2 = y^2 - y
from there its just algebra
13y = 2y^2-y
0= 2y^2 - 14y
0= y(2y-14)
2y=14
y=7
tada
y2-y2 would negate each other so the daughter would be 13
I believe anyway but math wasn’t my strong suit. Got a history or government question you need answered? hehehe
13 is incorrect…
beginning
13, 169
later on
169 169
… the woman never aged while the daughter went from 13 to 169…
you can also guess and check.. like i did. but w/ 7
7, 49
49, 91
7 to 49 years of age is 42 years..
49 to 91 years of age is 42 years.. it matches.
step 1). 13Y=2Y(2)-Y
-Y -Y
step 2). 13=2Y(2)
/2 /2
step 3). 6.5=Y(2)
ok its not 13 or 7 i changed mine to 6.5 lol
NicN you either truly understand math or else you are just blowing smoke but either way you lost me when you brought up 7 when the question had y’s and 13’s in it. hahaha man I hate math hahaha
6.5(2) would put the mom at 42 and a quarters years old while the girl is 6and a half.
I hope you can choose the answer that you think is correct
lol…thanks guys!! thanks especially NicN….really helped! u a maths genius?
I am sure it is 7
highfrye, you almost had it.. but not quite.
in step one you had it correct
13*y = 2*y^2 - Y
that is the same exact equation I wrote down first.
but you did algebra wrong next step
you could do a number of things but you lose a y somewhere.
14*y = 2*y^2
is what you could get next..
then from that
14 = 2*y
7 = y
Khyron32, I do understand math like this.. Ive done a bit of it I guess you could say…
what dont you get by
womans change in years = daughters change in years
Future womans age- Current womans age= Future daughter age - Current daughter age
(13*y) - (y^2) = (y^2) - (y)
??
no not a math genious.. just computer engineer major
ACK Brain is hurting… grey matter is leaking out of my head… I hate math
i don’t have a job yet, senior in college. but I am sure I will find one I do=]
