safety help: I’m running out of options! - Help.com

I’m running out of options!

So, to give you some background info, my dog is a Pit Bull/ Saint Bernard mix and his just over 2 years old. So here’s the problem. He’s pretty much an indoor dog, and only goes outside when we go hiking, camping, etc. or out to potty. He’s mostly muscle, so he’s bigger than me. (He weighs 90 pounds) He has tons and tons of energy and I don’t always have the time to take him out and run. This causes him to jump the fence to our yard and roam the neighborhood and he isn’t always to keen on being caught. Due to his breed and sheer size, he’s quite intimidating, so obviously I can’t have him running around wherever he pleases. Our fence is 6 feet high and he has a chain we put him on every time he goes out. Recently we’ve put him in a harness to keep him from choking, but no matter how tight it is, he finds a way to get out of it. If I cage him, he’s even more wild and rambunctious than ever when you let him out. I don’t know what is left to do, other than build a 12 foot electrical fence. But this really wouldn’t work either because I have an outdoor cat that uses the fence often. Does ANYBODY out there have some sort of realistic alternative I can try? I love my wild dog and I just want to keep him safe, but I’m ready to ship him off to Egypt….

Electric fence? Or maybe get a dog-walker? Look on craigslist for someone to walk your dog.

Dang… Somehow find time to walk him?

If worst comes to worst… the worst will have to happen. I’m sorry, but I can’t think of any more things.

haha..Cesar Milan is definitely an option! My parents have two dogs… a huge german shepherd and a pit bull mix, & they’re both VERY strong. The pit bull mix actually chewed through the bottom of the METAL door on my dad’s shop. That is so disturbing! :(
And I could walk them when they were younger puppies, but now if I let them out of the pen, they drag me, LITERALLY. It’s not good. I’ve tried all kinds of things! I wanted to take them jogging with me, but that idea is completely shot! haha.
It sounds like their fence is about the same height as yours. Are you completely sure he hasn’t found a place to squeeze through the fence instead of jump over it?

Get an invisible fence. That way nothing changes for the cat

Ok for starters why Egypt hmm? Lol, you know I’m Egyptian and would love to take him off your hands, but we deal with camals back home :p lol just kidding. Well, could you get a bigger fence? And do you have a back garden where you could maybe put a metal gate between the garden and the garage so he doesn’t run out?

Nah, he jumps over it. He LOOOVES to jump.

The invisible fence wouldn’t stop him. He’d run into it a few times then just jump as high as he could over the top…

hehe Egypt because it’s far away!! No, there’s just about 10 feet of open space between our house and the fence.

I’m starting to think he’s Houdini reincarnated…

You can put the invisible fence at the top of the fence you already have, which will extend it another 6 feet (at least, although I think they probably go much higher than that)

I’m still looking into it. The only dealer thats anywhere close to me in 100 miles away, so I’m still trying to figure out how I can get them to come out and look at my yard without spending an arm and a leg. But it looks to be exactly what I’ve been searching for, so I’m sure if you have a dealer close to you, it will be a lot easier for you. =)

haha. I know what you mean. I live out in the middle of nowhere so the nearest large city is about an hour or more away. Any kind of maintenance costs a ton!

I had to send them an email, because I had no clue either. This is what they said…

“Very simply, a wire is concealed around the perimeter of your property, establishing your pet’s Invisible Boundary®. A transmitter hidden in an out-of-the way location - like a basement or garage - sends a radio signal along the wire. The radio signal is picked up by your pet’s Computer Collar®, which emits a warning sound when he approaches the Invisible Boundary. Through Safe Dog® training your dog learns to obey the signal and stay within the established boundaries.”

They’re pretty common in suburban neighborhoods, like in my parents’ neighborhood you’re not allowed to have a fence, so these are perfect.

Well an invisible fence would be good, but to walk your dog, (which you still will need to do) I would reccomend a head collar Victoria Stillwell (on ita me or the dog) uses these because it if you are connected to your dogs head, it cand pull becuase you control its muzzle. It has never failed on her show. he is one website that sells them … http://www.cannyco.us/index.php but you could probaly find something just as good and cheaper on ebay.

Thanks, I’ll look into it. The invisible fence wouldn’t work in my area because we’re so rural- but I haven’t lost hope…yet. But I’ll give the head collar a look.

I am so sorry it didnt work out, here is a good site.. http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS… \

Is your dog neutered? that may cause some of his high energy and craziness if he isnt neutered.

Ooohh no, he’s neutered! haha He didn’t have the greatest puppyhood (NOT my fault- I got him when he was almost a year and a half old) and I think that has a lot to do with him inability to listen and be trained in any manner. He’s just the cutest thing, though, which is certainly his one saving grace…
Thanks again, for your help! I’m still checking out those interesting looking collars. =p

Haha im glad hes cute :) What about those things on fences that lean inward so nothing can jump out? I couldn’t find a picture but its just like wire that extends off the top of the fence and prevents jumping out. Idk how to explain it, i think it may have mentioned that somewhere in the site i sent you.

Yeah, I know what your talking about. We’re completely redoing our fence soon, and that was in the plan. At this point, I think that’s our only option, and hopefully it works! =D
