Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
re-install windows on it, that should fix it.
if you cant install windows on it you should just throw it away. you fell for PR hype, and all your money now belongs to a pirate.
What happens when you reboot the computer? Does it shut off or stay running? When it comes back on when does the noise come back?
And don’t listen to Fat.Stoned.Ball, chances are if you’re on a Mac you’re not using Windows, and if you are, then you should be able to tell what the noise is :P
I put my computer to sleep and it started again once i woke it up and then stopped and I think its stopped for good or at least a while. Thanks. Any ideas what could have been running cause I was trying to find it closing windows shutting programs down nothing
By the way I don’t have windows your right, I have safari. Um and thanks again cause the reboot question made me think of putting it to sleep and that worked so…
Yeah, several things:
- You’re on a Mac Laptop (model unknown). You have fans, hard drives, and other moving parts in a computer. These could all make the noises.
- You had an application running in the background. Sometimes a pop up can appear and make annoying noises that you just can’t see
The list goes on, but you get my drift. If you think it is software (like a virus) check out Avast! for Mac. It charges but you do get a 90 day free trial. From there uninstall and reinstall for another few months.
If its hardware and it comes back, try to isolate where in the machine it was coming from. A small noise can mean big problems.
Well it wasn’t really a sound more like a video audio of some news channel. It talked about Obama, weather, etc. I had no pop ups, no programs I could find. It’s happened once before but I don’t remember how i stopped it. I think it just turned off by itself. Explanations?
Hmmm…
Do you use iTunes, more imporantly for any Podcasts/News Feeds? I am wondering if something got fudged around with in there.
In which, this could be a good step for when it happens next time (if it does):
Open iTunes and play a song or something other then a News Feed with Obama in it. Try making the music go up and down in volume to see if the noise goes up or down. Then try messing with the computer volume (using the volume keys on the actual keyboard outside of iTunes) and see what happens there.
Without actually being at your computer, its kinda hard trying to see what could be actually causing the problem, but if you say that you didn’t have any pop ups then the only thing it can be is a program.
This is something else to look into:
- If you are using OS X (Click on the Apple in the Top Left, then About this Mac and see if the OS is 10.x.x, preferably 10.4.x or higher so I can give further help more accurately) you should have the dashboard at the bottom of the screen showing apps that you can click on to make them appear. If there is a small arrow to the bottom we know that the app is still running. Try closing all apps when the music is running to isolate the issue to a specific program (iTunes, Safari, etc)
If you need any further instructions, let me know and I can try breaking it down further for you

my OS X is 10.5.x and it happened again just now but i just put it to sleep and then it stopped. It usually starts when I have itunes playing or a video but i paused everything and itunes was closed. It was a news things about some jobs being canceled for today, i don’t know. Oh and i don’t have any news feeds/podcasts on itunes. If it starts again i’m gonna shut all programs down and try to track it.
Check your Login options under Accounts in System Preferences to ensure there is no program or webpage that is set to hide when launched and is triggered to start when you log in..
System Preferences > Accounts > (unlock if required) > select your Account > Login Items (top right)
Check the list of Applications that are being launched when you log-in.. if still no luck.. try a few forums.. if still no luck then reset Safari.. AGAIN if still no luck then check other system processes such as Dashboard (unlikely).
Last but not least, if you have AppleCare for your MacBook then give them a shout.. (it’s free for first 90 Days without Extention (3 years) but if you took out AppleCare Protection then you have 3 years free) you can also take it out within the First year of purchase, either online or at an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Reseller.
Good Luck!
My best guess would be something on a webpage in the background- maybe another tab in a Safari window, or a window you had minimized/hidden. But yeah, shutting everything down or rebooting would do it in that case.
