For what it is worth, I too lament the fact that people use text messaging style spelling in their regular emails. Then again, anyone who uses a word like “lament” would say that.

Yeah, I know, I’m a friggin’ elitist. But practicing good writing technique, even in casual emails, literally pays off for you. Increasingly, businesses are scrambling to find smart people. Bad writing makes people think you are uneducated. The way I see it, if you don’t continually practice good grammar and spelling, it will get harder for you to succeed in a professional setting. That means less income and fewer choices about where you can work.

i agree with shockilator. and to answer your question its because most people are either playing runescape or going on their i.m too much. and they think it takes too long to write the whole word because their lazy bums.
