I am in my 2nd year in college and I want to go to Law School. - Help.com

I am in my 2nd year in college and I want to go to Law School.

But my GPA is NOT GOOD at all started with a 4.0 and within the last year it has seem to drop dramatically below 3.0…

I have taken practice LSAT test and I have gotten 177 on the practice test. The highest is 180

I specifically want to go to Yale law school or Columbia Law

With it being my 2nd year in college the more classes you take the harder it is to bring your GPA up (I would have to take about 12 classes and make A’s in them all to get my GPA back above a 3.0)

Is it possible I can get accepted into one of those school with lower GPA but with a near perfect LSAT score (i still have 2 years before I can apply to Law School)

What’s your major?

Certainly you should do whatever it takes to get your GPA up as high as possible. However, these days law schools are looking for a lot more. They want people who are well-rounded and have some life experience. So it would be important for you to get involved in organizations, volunteering, etc. as much as possible. I’ve also heard that they are much more likely to accept people who have worked for a couple of years after college.

Political Science w/ Minor in Sociology ( i have not gotten any low grades in classes that are within my major/minor..only in classes like science/math/foreign language

Yeah I’ve heard that too except I heard that if you GPA is low and your LSAT scores aren’t the best it would be better to get experience before applying except I want to go straight from college to law school (no break in between)

Yeah I understand that’s what you want to do, but you also want to go to really competitive schools, so maybe it would be better for you to work first.

I wouldn’t consider raising your GPA impossible. You do still have more than 12 classes left to take, and most of them will probably be in your major so you should be able to do well. You still have another year before you can even apply. Just get involved in as many extracurriculars as you can. Not everything has to be law/policy-related. They want people who can bring different perspectives and diversity to their program.

You’re welcome. Don’t worry too much. These things all tend to work themselves out.
