job help: Masters Degree student with a 4.0 GPA, and I can not find a decent paying job. - Help.com

Masters Degree student with a 4.0 GPA, and I can not find a decent paying job.

I have applied eveywhere I can, even willing to go anywhere, and I mean anywhere, even overseas for a good job. I can only find a job doing data entry paying barely above minimum wage. And now my car has broken down, and it would cost more to repair it, about $1,500, than it is actually worth. And now I will even lose my low paying job without transportation to get to work. My parents died when I was very young, and I do not have any other family to help me. I was homeless after my parents died because nobody helped. I am so upset, I do not want to be homeless again. I am not stupid and I am not lazy! I WANT TO WORK! I am so desperate, I do not know what to do

I would recommend doing more private jobs. If you put an ad in the newspaper looking for work, you might pick up quite a few odd jobs.
That’s all I can really recommend for you. The economy is so bad a 4.0 student can’t get a decent job…How sad.

Man I feel your pain!
Well not as good a GPA but…
As chubby said, whats ur major?
Have you made sure your cover letter is well worded and your resume sells you very well…
The other thing is once you get the interview… it all depends on your charisma and skills

Considering a job in education, I already have a B.S. degree, and I also have a letter of eligibility to apply for teaching jobs and passed the Social Science grade 6 through 12 certification test for the state of Florida. I have applied to all the surrounding school districts, but nothing has come up. My Masters is in Political Science, and I have also applied for jobs in Washington, D.C. and New York. I have applied with local community and government affairs positions, several lobbying firms, and even the United Nations. I am so upset now that even if I get a job offer out of state, and since my car has died, how am I going to transport myself around if there is no available public transportation. Believe me, I have had many people review my cover letters and resumes. I have not even been able to get an interview. I call people directly, I have been pounding on doors. I am willing to work anywhere. I have tried literally thousands of suggestions that friends and others have made to me. I do not know what else to do at this point.

Amani35, as someone who can totally empathize with your situation, the only suggestion that I can recomment is referrals. Back-track to all those people you have had personal contact with and see if anyone is willing to recommend you personally to their employer. A lot of times, companies give monetary incentives to employees who make recommendations for open positions.

In this economy, referrals are key because there are so many applicants for so few jobs.

Best of Luck

I understand the economy is bad. Sometimes its employers fault. They post the resume online and a person would apply for the job. Even though you exceed their requirements, they don’t contact that person. I don’t know why they bother posting it. I really feel for you. By the way good luck.

I begin to see the measure of the challenge in front of you. But given what you have accomplished up to this point, you must have deep personal resources and great determination. I wanted to take a moment just to leave a note of compassion for the difficulties and my confidence in your abilities.

I wish I had more concrete help to offer but just want to say, keep trying. It’ll always be in the last place you look ;)

I understant how you feel.

I define myself as a career counselor based upon my own experience. I have over 200 credtits. If you want free advice, If I were you, I would seek a career in the medical field. You alread have a degree, right? If yes, then you are on your way to a real degree. A science degree no less. Otherwise, stay at home and be a real parent the children of society. If you don’t have children then adopt them. Society needs real parents and real people. In other words anyone can create ART but not anyone can be a parent. Yes it takes a little time to study ART, but it takes a lot more to study the Sciences. This is why jobs–Good jobs are so hard to find. It is because there are so many educational opportunities that no-one knows what to seek, so they choose the easiest instead of the best. The OR tech is the easiest and the best right now as far as income and job availability unless of course, you are the best salesman in the world. Lawyers make good money too, if you are good at arguing your point.

I know how you feel. I also have a masters in art history none other, pretty useless, I speak 3 languages fluently and read a fourth one. What has killed me was the lack of experience. Even though I have tons of experience on museum and exhibit stuff I couldn’t even get an interview in a gallery for an art delivery position. Now I just got a full time job, but it only pays 11.50/hr. Not really my dream job but a job is a job and at least I’m getting work experience in a field that I like. I don’t know what to tell you. Keep you head up and go for everything. Even jobs for which you have experience but not a specific degree. The job I got was because I had experience working in the field not because I had the appropriate Bachelor’s or Master’s. i figured once in the door, i’ll try to do what i can to improve my situation. Good luck!

I am in the same boat. I graduated with a 4.0 at the end of 2007 in criminal justice, with emphasis on forensics and psychology and can’t find a job. I have 7 professional certificates ranging from Business to law enforcement and law, tons of skills, everything from professional art, to a diploma in creative writing, to forensic handwriting analysis and facial reconstruction, photography, archeology, paleontology experience. I was even offered a prodigy position while still in high school in archeology (but didn’t take it because I wanted to finish school)
I have no family either as I am an immigrant, and I also have two special needs children. I have no job, period! I have no insurance, I haven’t worked long enough to qualify for unemployment. My kids are on government insurance. I have over 50,000 in student loans to pay off and no income. I am so down about this situation I have no idea what to do. I can’t even get a job at McDonalds for crying out loud. I apply and never hear anything back. I feel for you, I really do.

I too have a masters degree and have applied for over 300 jobs, had 7 interviews and still can’t land a gig. Its so incredibly frustrating, we all did what society encouraged us to do. Further our educations so that we could get “better jobs.” But now, we have to settle for part-time retail jobs just to survive. I’ve been struggling for 7 months, my credit is shattered, my rep with my landlord is tarnished because I’ve been late with rent for months and I lost my car because I was unable to afford insurance. I wake up crying everday, barely sleep and find myself deeply resenting my peers who all have fabulous careers. I just don’t know how much longer I can live like this. Its just not fair, guys, it really isn’t.

I greee with Nrk3.
Fuking society tells us to go and get an education so you can have a better future. But it all sucks at the end. Manny of my high schools friends have better jobs than me or are in the same situation as me.
I can to this country when i was 13 and always motivated myself to work through then challanges, and now it all sucks.
Sometimes i think, what the hell, i dont know what to think…

I would suggest going into the Military. They will utilize your skills in your specialization and you will gain experience on the job for the military. Then when you get out, you will get interviews because you will be a step above the other applicants and more people will have respect for you because you served in the military.

PS- Don’t even bother applying for jobs online unless you get the job through networking, nobody is hiring, all the jobs posted online are 99% fake. Its a way for the companies to market themselves for their own benefit.

Good Luck!
