I had my college audition today.
For performing arts national diploma. I had been rehursing it with my drama teacher and she had told me the way in which to attack is.. so i did it that way. He said it was good, but then he asked me to do it a different way, which i did. And he said i took direction well amongst other things which were good comments. But then he asked me if i did anything outside of school, and i said no. And he said oh, well ive accepted 25 people and they all have taken singing or dancing classes. I was like erm okay… but im my head i was thinking but i can dance! i can dance good probabaly just as good as all of them! I can show you now!
And so i felt like crap.. i thought well thats its im not getting in now am i, if youve taken 25 people on that have had these lessons. Why the hell are you going to take me.
So now im almost convinced i havent got in, and im a terrible state over it. This is all ive ever wanted to do and all i do want to do. And if i dont get in, im goign to be mortified. This means everythign to me, more than half of those that have probabaly got in. Ive been in tears all afternoon, but mum says i should worry, and if he said my audition was good then he cant not give me a place just because i havent had lessons.
But ive convinced myself, and i just feel like a complete and utter f*** up.

Couldn’t you just sign up for dance/vocal lessons now? It will let him know that your commitment is serious, and that you’re getting the training he believes you need. Even though you wouldn’t have actually taken the lessons yet, maybe it will be enough for him to be happy with you.
Hmmm maybe. And then i was like ohh ive been on shows! And he was like what ones… so i thought of threee and i couldnt think of the last one! And i was like oh nooo. And then walking back i remembered it! So i phoned up the college and left a messege for him simply saying the words, beauty and the beast. So hopefully he will be sort of impressed i guess that i went through the trouble of phoning up just to let him know the name of this one show?
Ohh i dunno.
This is one of those occasions to take a really fatalistic viewpoint. Acting is a really, really, really competitive field. If you can’t pass the audition to be among the Chosen Few to get accepted to the program, then you would be wasting your time anyway.
So, take a few deep breaths, and tell yourself, “If I have what it takes, I will be accepted, and it will be wonderful. And if I DON”T have what it takes, then it’s better that I should find out now, instead of spending years studying for a profession that is only going to break my heart.”
So, the long and short of it is this: If it was meant to be, it will happen.
I was a drama major in a school that did NOT have an audition process, and, believe me, there were a lot of people there who would have been much, much better off somewhere else.
Good luck, whatever happens.
Have more confidence in yourself. I think it’s ok that you left him a message. If anything, it shows him that you are studious, detail oriented, and really care about getting accepted.
But. I know i DO have what it takes. I know i AM good at drama.
I know im good. Im on target for an A in my Exam.
When you look at people i know that are on the course from previous years, i am better than MAAANNNNYY of them, and i don’t have a clue why they got on the course.
The audition itself went really well, i was really happy with it, as was he.
It was just the “everyone ive accepted has done something outside of school” that got me down.

Yeah, well thats what i thought. And i know he’s good friends with my drama teacher which can’t be a bad thing.
I just don’t know what the hell i will do if i don’t get in.
It could be that he’ll take you ont the course becasue he saw how good you were wants to help to develop your skills; including all of the other activities. If he’s taken 25 of the same already maybe he’s looking for something different.
And maybe that’s you! All you can do is wait and see though.

Ahhh you might be right. Because its not like i messed the audition up. He gave me good feedback towards the actual audition.
Yeah exactly. And especially with this sort of audition; they’re always looking for people who are different, that stand out and who they actually remember. He may be really interesting in seeing how you can develop on the course if you get the guidance they can give you.

I suppose, i think aswell its scared me because i had my heart set on this. This is all i want to do. I mean this will mess up my entire future, uni, everything. I had it all planned.
Yeah I know it must be a little scary. There’s not much you can do apart from wait for their answer though.
(and try not to be too nervous in the meantime)
At the university where I work, we just auditioned 300 people for a graduate program in acting. Ten made the cut. The other 290 probably were talented, too, to have come that far–that’s just the kind of profession it is.
I am not saying that to discourage you; obviously, there were 10 who DID make the company, and you could be one of those. I am just trying to make you understand that the odds against making it to the top in this competitive field are overwhelming. You don’t merely have to be GOOD; you have to be BEST.
I’m glad you have confidence in your talent, and I really, really hope it works out exactly the way you planned.

I understand its very competitive.
But as my drama teacher said; its not as if im applying for RADA or anything. Its just me, wanting to take performing arts at college.
About half of the people that audition get in, but the man said himself, you’d be suprised at he many people don’t bother even learning the peice and walk in with their script, and the amount of people that audition thinking that its just a laugh and an easy way out of higher education.
And that isnt me.
