Too many illiterate people on HELP.

I for one am sick of all the people who either can’t spell correctly, can’t use punctuation, can’t complete a sentence, or some combination of the three. What happened to the little advisor above the “start a new post” box that said spelling and grammar are important because people are more likely to reply if they can understand it? Where did that go? Somebody needs to do something about it. I hate scrolling through five hundred posts a day and finding only one or two that look like they are written by somebody who is not a native of some foreign country who took a two hour class on english or a rabid monkey with cerebral palsy that types by banging its head on the keyboard.

I would like to clear a few things up.

First, I have no problem with people who don’t use English as their first language. If they do come from a foreign country and are trying their best to type correctly, I applaud them for their efforts. What I have a problem with is people who grew up speaking English as their first language, and whose parents both speak English, and have the kid from Puerto Rico, again, who I applaud, type more correctly then they do. Thats just lazy.

Second, I know I’m not perfect. But I actually TRY to type correctly. I have Dyslexia, so reading and writing are difficult for me. So I make typos. I Dont have a problem with anyone making typos, but whn u typ lik ths n make crzy a$$ wrds w/ fnky symbls, it makes it darn near impossible for me to read it, and I’m sure that goes for others as well, Dyslexia or not. Would it be so hard for people to take the extra thirty seconds a page to type out the words correctly?

Third, I found the HELP advisor. It says: “Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are all important. Proper writing helps our automated systems work better and people will be more willing to answer intelligently written posts.” So it is not just me. HELP itself wants people to type more intelligently, as it helps the web site work more efficiently and smoothly.

Im talking about netspeak you idiots! Period, thats it. I dont care about foreigners or people with less education. I meen id!0ts who (email removed) th3 @b!lty 2 spk n typ rite butt tlk lk3 th!s jst cawse th3y tink it mks dem l00k kewl.

Its freaking retarded. They are extreme posers. It actually takes more effort to type like a moron than it does to type grammatically correct. And MUCH more effort to understand it. How is anyone supposed to help you find out if the guy you like likes you if we can’t even understand what the problem is because yu wnt 2 no y he nors ya and mks fun 0 yo.

That’s just how people type though. It’s not like we can stop every single error that people make in grammar.

Seems like your quest for perfection must start with yourself.

Hi Hybrid,

First off, I want to say that I do enjoy reading posts that are easier to understand. And your posts/replies are well written and are easy to understand. That is a “kudo” to you; you have done well in school and learned all that you can learn about the English language.

However, English is not the only thing worth learning….and just b/c a person does not speak English well, does not make that person a rabid monkey or whatever it was that you said up there…..

The internet is worldwide and it gives us the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. That opportunity is amazingly wonderful in my opinion. And in order to have that opportunity, I am willing to forego some of the difficulty in understanding some posts.

In addition, do you speak only one language, Hybrid? Many people in the world are at least bilingual; and some are multilingual. Here in the United States, where most citizens speak only English, we are actually limiting ourselves; and we are limiting our contact with the world.

If the “most important language to know” suddenly became Mandarin Chinese, do you think that you would have some problem trying to communicate? Mandarin Chinese is giving English a run for its money on the number of people who speak it….. In addition, Spanish is becoming an important language to know. What if Spanish became the “unspoken” second language of the USA???? (It would take many years and much argument for it to become the official second language….but it is quickly, through changing social mores, becoming the “unspoken” second language)……anyway, Hybrid, would you be the one who has trouble communicating then?

I sort of understand where Hybrid is coming from. I don’t mind the ones that are not perfect, typos and such, or the ones where English is not the primary language. The ones that I have trouble with are the ones that use the l33t speak or text talk or whatever it is called. It is no harder to type “that” than it is to type “dat”. I think people just get into to much of a hurry and revert to text typing and it is difficult to read sometimes.

Solution, when you find a post you don’t want to take the time to figure out, hit the back button and move on to the next one.

Sorry, you sound pretty stuck up. Go easy on the rest of the world. Not everyone has been exposed to the level of help that you have had. Others are brilliant mathematically and just can’t get the spelling or punctuation right. Others may not have had the educational structure you have had. Believe me, education in America is not equal. Give everyone a break, try to think of life in their shoes.

I’m on my way out the door, so I probably won’t be able to carry on a convo with you unless you get verified and keep in touch….

But, I’m curious: what makes you say that education in America is not equal? I know: socio economic class/private school and all that….but what about the masses? Do you think it’s unequal with the “masses?” And if so, could you give me some examples?

I ask because I’m in graduate school and have been/will be an educator in various roles….
