Is the US government meddling too much in our private lives?

Has anyone heard about the fee on SUV’s? Since I drive a Suburban, I will be paying an extra $32 a year as a fee on this vehicle. And next year, the fee will raise to $56 a year.

Now, I’m not saying that is a huge amount of money; after all, anyone who can afford to drive one of those gas guzzlers can afford $50 a year.

What IS my concern, however, is that the government has been calling for this “tax” for a while now; and it never passed, not as a “tax.” The reason it didn’t pass as a tax is because I already pay taxes on my Suburban….I pay yearly taxes. And the taxes that I pay are plenty high.

However, in order to get around this, the government has called it a “fee.” I do not think it is right. I think that basically it is a double taxation/too much government sort of thing…..

i’m sure it’s mean to discourage people from buying SUVs because as you say, they’re gas guzzlers and aren’t very environmentally friendly! it’s a reasonable tactic if that’s the case.

Now, before you all jump on my rear for driving such an awful vehicle, let me explain:

I’m not one to drive something that is so bad for the environment. Truly. Most of the time, I drive a little four cylinder Cobalt around town.

However, I have three children. All three of my children are still in car seats. Car seats take up more more space than a fat person does in the seat of a car. Therefore, our choice of vehicles was limited. I traded in a 97 Ford Taurus to buy a 2003 Suburban….because I had one child who was in an infant seat; and was pregnant with a second. Though, in that case, we could have fit both car seats in the back of the suburban, we would have had no room for luggage when traveling (and we travel with a cooler full of bread/cereal/etc so that we don’t have to spend as much money eating out)

So, we got a suburban.

The reason we chose a suburban over a mini van is b/c my husb is a state trooper, and he has been to many accidents. In all of those accidents, he has not seen a suburban come out as the “loser” so much as other vehicles. Since we have such precious cargo to protect….three babies, we chose the suburban.

Please read above. I think that there is a very valid reason for having the burb. The only reason we bought it was for safety and ease of travel with a passel of kids.

Not to mention that before our third was born, we were foster parents….we would often have 6 kids at a time in our home. How would you cart 6 kids around??? Would it be better if we had two Tauruses (for example) and drove two vehicles to church; school; etc.

I also want to mention that we were foster parents without pay….never once did we take the payment offered by the state. Therefore, our funds were limited. We would spend Saturday mornings taking our foster kids around town to garage sales. Each kid (ours and foster) got $4 to spend. They were happy with that; as it was “bonding” time…..

So, no, we are not the rich a-holes at the top of the hill who have the best of the best. The burb was purchased purely out of necessity. And now, we have a cobalt that we drive unless we are going on long family trips. The burb sits in the driveway for the most part.

IN ADDITION:

This post is not to ask anyone if it’s “OK” for me to have a burb. It’s to ask about the goverment going too far

Unfortunately, the government does meddle too much in citizens’ personal lives, and they probably always will. It’s kind of ironic when you think about it; they trust us enough to vote for the people who will lead/govern us, but they don’t trust us enough to be in charge of our own lives.

yeah i think it’s fine to have a burban in that case…if your willing to pay extra and your husband is absolutely right i have rarely seen an accident where the suburban doesn’t win…and 3 kids yeah it’s definetly understandable and mini vans meh not 4 me but yes the government i dont trust at all but trying to say it’s a fee isntead of a tax…is there way knowing that most american people will just listen and be dumb and not realize it’s a tax because it’s psychology…example marketing we don’t say cheap selling something we say less expensive a lot of difference…so instead of tax where people dont want higher taxes they say…fee
