Quick survey question: Do you think it’s unreasonable to expect a 16 year old homeschooler to get out of bed by 10 am on weekdays?
- Yes get off his back
- No what a slacker
- Not sure
Background: My son gets 10+ hours of sleep a day, and is considerably behind in his schoolwork.
If you could include your age and home country or state, I’d be very grateful.
Thanks! Tired single dad.

I’d be making sure he gets out of bed by 7 and ready for homeschooling at 8.
Psychological studies show that our brain is able to retain more information from 9am - 1pm, and that 8 hours of sleep is actually TOO much…
7 hours of sleep is now considered ideal…
so, wake at 7am, snooze till half 7am, be totally ready to begin by half 8am…
3rd year Psych Student!!
Age = 20!
If I was home schooling my child, they’d be studying within normal school hours.
If they don’t start getting with the program, they should return to a public school. Home schooling requires hard work and dedication from both the child and the parent, and can quickly become exhausting if a routine and plan is not adhered to.
Try not to dedicate much more time to it, if he can’t start getting motivated, because it could severely ruin his chances of getting employment later, or even require him to return to school as a mature age student to be able to get anywhere in life.
Based on my own experience, I love sleeping when I was in my teens (in fact up to now LOL)
Hell no I used to have to get up at 4 in the morning to feed the hogs
You could threaten him with boarding school…. my dad did that with me.. I wasn’t home schooled, but it scared me into doing better!

It’s all good Jerry. All workin sweet now. Just voted. I’m sure the OP will appreciate ur effort.
Good onya man !
If he wasn’t considerably behind in his work, and was keeping up with it I’d say he was fine but since he’s not he can handle getting up at 7am.
age: 21
Definitely before 10:00. I’m homeschooled too, and my mom makes me get up by eight wether I went to bed at 10:00 or 3 in the morning!
I just realized that I voted the wrong way…he should get up before 10!
And, it’s OK to be his dad…lay down a few ground rules and then enforce them!
I’m 36, by the way…
It’s harder for people to sleep when they have low levels of Serotonin in their body…
The more of it you have, the faster you’ll sleep and waking up is that little bit less daunting… in the end it’ll make it easier for him to get up and get down to learning stuff.. he just needs a routine… Try get him to eat as much Omega 3 as he can… (Fish oil capsules are good, I take them, they work!)
So, a cold shower before bed, warm milk, ice cream… they increase serotonin…
i CAN’t get up before 10… I work at night though, so its tough…
I get up at 5 o’oclock EVERY morning for work, and I’m only 18. I agree with just about everyone above me, it’s okay to be dad, and its probably better if you do. =D Best of luck!!
If he’s that casual about home-schooling, then he’s doing it just to get out of bothering with an education. I’d have his a** back in school by tomorrow morning if he were mine.
