I had a nasty virus of some sort so I had to re-format my hard drive, which I have never done in the 2 years I have had my current PC.

I didn’t think I would need to worry about loosing all my files (of which I have hundreds including precious photographs, my resume, etc etc.) because I had been using windows vista automatic backups to my external hard drive.

However now I have reinstalled windows, I have tried to restore the files from the last backup on my external hard drive, but windows backup centre is saying that the drive ïs not ready or contains no backup files”.

Can anyone help?

Check and make sure that the external HDD can be seen, if so then you need to take ownership of the files located there. Then you will be able to reinstall the files that you backed up. It is better to manually backup all of your files manually once a week, that way there not formated with the security feature. Hope this helps :-)
