I’m getting married next May (2010) and I’m wondering
if anyone can tell me cheap ways to get everything done (wedding- civil ceremony, reception, dress and tux, honeymoon I’M IN CANADA). I’m getting really stressed trying to figure out what we need to do (marriage licenses, name change, etc) and how much money we’ll need….HELP!

Congratulations!
You can check with your pastors, many just take 20 bucks for their service. Can your friends help with food, prepare and bring and set up for you. Can they lend tableware and linens, how much can you do yourselves to save money.
Do you or your friends have someone they know that can make your cake? I am a decorator, cakes, wish I could help you out.
Where locally, can the two of you spend your honeymoon, does anyone have a place for you both? Do you know anyone that can help with flowers? I have huge gardens I use for my cakes, I’d gladly give you some. Go to nurserys and ask if you can work and get floral in exchange for pay. Hope that helps. Good luck!
thanks….i’ll see about all that….i forgot about a cake LOL…..it seems like i’ll never be able to save this much money!!!! honeymoon we are going an hour away from here and an hour and a half….but still meals, money to go places, gas, etc! it’s so expensive……i’m really worried
and what steps do i take to plan the civil ceremony?
The cheapest way to go is what you chose, civil ceremony. You have to go to the City Hall and register your marriage. They will give you tons of papers to fill out for free but the actual cost is very little with a judge. Name change usually cost more than getting married in a civil court. Reception can be done at your or his home with a few very close friends and like 2greeneyes suggested, they can contribute food wise. Dress can be rented in most bridal shops, so does tux in Tuxido shops.
OK I’ll start on that….i’m so stressed out already because i’m so unsure of how to go about everything and i want to know the total cost to see if we can save that much…..
Can you make things ahead, Do you cook? you can make and wrap and freeze and put in your fridge there. You can make it special and ahead of time. Thrill your groom with all your dishes.
yeah i can make some stuff to bring to a reception and maybe ask people to bring something….
hey chill. marriage ceremony is not as important as the marriage itself. it is what you do with your lives together that is essential.
You have until next May, plenty of time to work this all out. Try to relax, take each step with calmness of mind. Ask your friends to take a subject and get back with you.
If you are short of money, then just get married in a City Hall with two witnesses you flagged down in the building for 10 minutes. Then you and your hubby go to a nice restaurant to celebrate. When you have enough money saved later on, you can always go for a honeymoon somewhere romantic. Honeymoons nowadays don’t happen right after marriage.

I don’t have a lot of friends….I’m kind of a loner I guess….I just want to know how much everything will cost so I know where we are at you know? We talked and if we can’t get married in a small wedding (we can’t afford it so civil ceremony it is) then we are going on a honeymoon.
What I suggested without a honeymoon will cost you all together 200 Canadian dollars. If you want your honeymoon, add your cost to it.
I had dreams of a normal wedding and a long honeymoon you know? If I can’t have a normal wedding (it doesn’t matter as long as I get to marry my honey) then I want a honeymoon…..we aren’t going far it’s just meals and gas, money to do a few things, etc.
Where in Canada are you going and for how long? I am from Canada too.
Right,
Times are so tough for many right now. Yes, just enjoy being with eachother and dont sweat the material stuff. You can do without all the frills for now, and wait for a better time when money isn’t so tight. Just as long as you both are together.

I don’t care about frills and stuff I just want to marry my sweetie, go on a small honeymoon and have a reception since all family and friends can’t come to the civil ceremony
Yes, those are very expensive. You will see how beautiful they are and spending so little would not be enough for a sightseeing. Besides, you are going to be in your honeymoon, who wants to go sightseeing? If I were you, I would put a sort of “request” to our friends to contribute as a wedding gift towards your honeymoon. Since you are spending most of your honeymoon days at home anyway, why not saving money then and go for a beautiful vacation as a honeymoon later on when you have money. My hubby and I are married for a little over a year now and guess what, our honeymoon was on our first anniversary.
Check ebay out, I saw a story of a lady that got her dress made for her and it was amazine and it was from ebay, also buy a ready made cake you can get some really nice ones and decorate with your own ribbon or flowers, ballons are cheaper thatn flowers to decorate your hall, get an arch or something they are simple but effective, some people use their wedding cake as dessert saving on dessert costs, I can’t really help you on ceremony costs as they probrbly differ over there than here in the uk. Good luck and congratulations, I wish it was me getting married
try getting married abroad that was what we was going to do as they do loads of different packages look it up one of the good ones is sandals they do it in the carribean or maybe like quite a nice hotel or resturant etc for the dress you could get a second hand one as its only worn once? ebays good for that or in your local newspaper etc
congratulations so glad for you
let me know how you get on
good luck
hope this helps
xx

Where do you suggest? Has to be in NS as that’s where we live….we just thought we could go to flea markets in halifax, go karting in Annapolis Royal, meals obviously and Upper Clements Park in Annapolis Royal and maybe the zoo that’s in between….maybe focus on one place???
We are going on a honeymoon after we get married for 3 days. It’s important to us to make time and find money for one.
Also we won’t have time or money to go on a honeymoon later as we want to start a family :)
maybe a weekend in a nice hotel? we have some in the uk they’re quite cheap maybe you’ve got some around by you? are you hoping to start a family on your honeymoon then?

it’ll probably be just me and my honey saving…..my parents don’t know about it yet…waiting for the ring we picked out to come in
do they know your engaged though? or do they not know you set a date etc?

they don’t know yet. i’m telling them after the ring comes in and he officially asks me
Looks like I came a little late to give help, so…
CONGARTULATIONS!!!!!!
thanks but i’d like some advice and/or suggestions if you have some :)
Okay, so keep in mind I’m a little too lazy to scroll up and read what everyone else told you, so I apologise if I’m just repeating someone else’s advice.
When my mom got married to my step-dad, she did the whole thing in under $1,000.00. What she did was have her friends and family bring a dish from home- covered the food.
Then of course she had to borrow the tuxes and rent a spot. See if you can find an old building that wouldn’t take much to clean up, or something you could do yourself.
She spent the most on her dress and the invitations.
Decorations can be handmade from crafts from a dollar store.
Any thing I missed??
no that’s pretty good advice…..what about a honeymoon….about 3 days and 2 nights
we are doing something in the province we live in NS
I’m not familiar with that area at all, but maybe just somewhere pretty so you could go sightseeing or hiking. Or just something you could do together that won’t cost much. Or you could just rent a hotel and stay there. ;) haha sorry. Ummmm Oh!
And if your able, pack your own food. That will save you a ton right there. Other than that I really don’t know…
Best of luck, and have fun!!
