It doesn’t melt instantly because it takes time for the ice to reach its melting point… the speed at which it turns to water depends on how cold the ice is to begin with and the source of heat to which it is exposed.

It should be noted that ‘cold’ doesn’t actually exist…there is only the absence of heat energy. The heat flows across a temperature gradient to the ice at a rate determined by the medium the ice is suspended in. If it is in water, the heat energy is conducted into the ice much more quickly and it will melt more quickly. Air has moer insulative properties so it will take a lot longer for the heat energy from the air to be conducted into the ice melting it.

It does not melt instantly because heat energy is not instantly transferred into the ice cube. It could melt instantly if enough energy was transferred into the cube…like if you were on the sun in a capsule and threw the ice cube out the window…the ice cube would instantly melt and the water would be vaporized into a gas.

If that was to me, then you’re wrong. I don’t go to school, and that’s a pretty odd work assignment. If you look back at my other posts, you’ll see that I’m just interested in a lot of scientific type stuff. I think that it’s good to ask questions and get an understanding of how things work.
