you could set the iPod as a shared device on a Windows network if your desktop is local.

can you access your desktop in real life? If so, go to my computer and set up a computer workgroup for Windows network in My network places; then, right-click the iPod disk on that ‘my computer’, and set it as a shared device in properties. Finally, access the workgroup you created from your lappy and go to my network places for the pod.
