I hate my grandmother (paternal). - Help.com

I hate my grandmother (paternal).

I just heard a conversation I wasnt supposed to hear! She, a crazy, weight-obsessed lady, was telling my mother that Ive gained so much weight. And I cant even express the shame and disgust in her voice. And that is just ridiculous! Some would actually say Im skinny, and I havent added a pound since summer. I was a bit chubby when I was a kid, which I believe is the reason I take these words too seriously, but that was like 10 years ago.
But how can a person, a family member, be so unreasonably mean!?
Arent grandmas the people who love you unconditionaly forever and ever… Like my other granny.

Pffft she’s probably jealous that you’re young and in good health.

No, that’s just a cultural perception, grandparents can be as mean as others, it’s just that they try to be nice *because* of culture.

As for your weight, I’m sure you’re fine: old people can get neurotic and she might be speaking out of her unconscious.

Sane has nothing to do with it, really. We’re all “sick” in one way or another, I’d contend there’s one point of the phenomenal world that every person has, that focus of thanatos. For your grandma, that’s probally weight, perhaps with her own acculturation in the 1920-1950s in which any sort of weight problem was contemptible; or from her own struggles with it.

tl;dr: She has her opinion, oh well. You’re fine, right?

It’s appeasing to still have a grandmother for most people. They may be bitter cynics during your existence, but they have endured unfathomable moments which would be fallicious for our generation to disregard in spite of the banality of senior criticism.
