The short story “The Stolen Party” shows how social stratification can cause anger between parents and children. When Rosaura is invited to her rich friend’s party her mother does not want her to go. She does not see any reason that she should not go and she really wants to, but her mother fears that she will face social stratification like she has because she is from a lower class. Her mother also thinks that Rosaura’s friendship with Luciana will just end badly because they are different classes. Rosaura does not agree with her mother and is angry at her for making such suggestions. Her mother does let her go to the party anyways though. At the party Rosaura did have a fun time, but her friend’s mother did make her help out around the party occasionally. At the end of the party when everybody was leaving and Rosaura’s friend’s mother was handing out presents to those that were leaving and when she got to Rosaura, instead of giving her a present, she gave her two bills. That is when Rosaura realized that her friend’s mother did not think of her as a guest at the party but just another servant.
Rosaura has never experienced social stratification and does not see it as a problem for her. This is shown when Rosaura says to her mother, “Rich people go to heaven too” (1). This shows how she has never been treated unequally because of her class before. She thinks of herself and her friend as equals even though they are far different classes. She feels that she was invited to the party because Luciana is her friend and no other reason than that. She even states’ “I’m going because I’ve been invited… I’ve been invited because Luciana is my friend. So there” (1) Rosaura and Luciana are friends. They would do their homework together, have tea together, and tell each other secrets. The stratification was not an issue between them but it was for their parents and some of the other kids at the party.
Rosaura’s mother has experienced social stratification and fears what Rosaura will experience if she goes to the party. Her mother feared that she would be treated not as a friend but as “the maid’s daughter” (1). At the party Luciana treated Rosaura as a friend but Luciana’s mother treated her as “the maid’s daughter” (1). Social stratification is more common among adults and less so with kids. It must be taught. When Luciana’s mother handed Rosaura the two bills she did not realize what she had just done to Rosaura. She had shown Rosaura that she was not an equal but was below them. Luciana’s mother did not do this to be mean to Rosaura but because that is how the rich treat servants, and in her eyes Rosaura was just another servant.
At the party one of Luciana’s cousins treated Rosaura as less than because of her class. It did not appear that the cousin hurt Rosaura’s feelings but it was obvious that she was trying to. Rosaura just thought of her as an unpleasant girl. The cousin did not think that Rosaura was a friend of Luciana’s because they did not go to the same school. When Rosaura told her that she was the daughter of an employee the cousin immediately wanted to know what Rosaura’s mother did. But before their conversation could continue Luciana’s mother asked Rosaura to serve the hotdogs. The cousin will probably grow up to be just like Luciana’s mother. She will likely look down on people who are of a lower class then her. She has the same kind of attitude towards people as Luciana’s mother.
In every country in the world people work for other people. But is that a reason that the workers should be treated as something less than the employer? Does that mean that the employee’s children should be treated as less than the employer’s children? But in our world this class discrimination exists everywhere.
