Are commission-only sales jobs worth it?

I have been unemployed for over 3 months and I am desperate for a job. It seems like all I can find are commission-only sales positions. I have done sales before, but it was salary+commission. Has anyone worked for commission? How was the experience like? How is the job atmosphere? I am not a pushy guy, and I don’t like to fudge customers over, so I don’t know if I can cut it as a sales guy. Thoughts?!?

As you know, sales is about personal relationships and knowing your customers; they trust you enough to fill their needs. In high-margin activities, commission only could work fine (real estate, major sales).

If you have to do a lot of low-margin high-pressure, non-relationship based sales with plenty of add-ons to push, you may hate it.

But any experience will give you perspective.

What are your skills? Lots of places need business development people.

I found this post when I googled are “commission only jobs worth it?” I just applied for a merchant account position with Central Payment Corporation. Same as you, I’m not pushy. But I have another source of income (very small) that I possible could live on while I work my merchant account sales. I’m trying to make a decision.
