Slammed my finger in the door and it still hurts: When should I go to the doctor?

I slammed it in a bedroom door- so originally I wasn’t worried about it. But it’s been 24 hours and it is still throbbing. It is clearly bruised under the nail- and I feel like there might be some issues with circulation.

About 14 years ago I slammed my finger in a car door- and it was like this. Eventually the fingernail fell off and my fingernail has been deformed ever since. I DO NOT want this to happen again. My parents told me that if I had relieved the pressure (drilling a hole through my nail) that it wouldn’t have happened. (They wanted to do it themselves- I’d go to the doctor.)

At what point should I go to the doctor?

Made an appointment. Still feel like this is some little thing and they’ll think I’m paranoid… but I suppose I can just show them my other finger and prove I have a reason to be paranoid.

Wow, your parents sound like savages.lol

Well actually, they might have a point but who the hell is going to drill a hole in there finger nail? It would be in your best interest to consult with a doctor first, and take heed to their remedies before you make any drastic decisions or even neglect the injury. I remember when I slammed the door on my finger, twice throughout my childhood. The pain was unbearable for my age and when my fingernail was eventually ripe enough to pluck off, it turns out that my father misinterpreted the ripeness and yanked it off while I endured more bleeding along with intense pain.

I thought so too… so I screamed bloody murder until they gave up. (Now I regret that) My parents grew up on a farm… and my especially grew up anti-doctor. So, since they “knew” what to do- my dad wanted to do it himself.

I personally am quite cowardly- I’m not into self-surgery

I was the same way. My parents we raised on rural farmland in which they never felt the necessity to visit a hospital for anything. They insisted on domesticated clinical methods and have not really changed much to this day. I still hold contempt for my dad when he ripped my nail off with utter alacrity.

The doc will do it in a hygenic enviroment. Must be something about self surgery with rural folk…. My family are all farmers…my dad put a hole in his own in front of me. Go to the doc before it is the size of a sasuage!

No, I have NO intention of self-surgery. I am cowardly and I wouldn’t know how to start anyways. Besides- I’m still not sure anything is damaged. I think I may be overreacting. (but then again…) I have made an appointment though.
