As in, chicks who are geeks who also happen to be cool?
So what you are asking is: Since when is dressing and acting LIKE a geek a cool/fashionable thing?
But not necessarily BEING a genuine geek. Just acting like one.
Does anyone find this question confusing and absurd, or is it just me.
when i was in like 11th grade, so like … 5 yrs ago

5 to 6 years
Since some geek invented fire.
I was nerd cool before nerds were cool… mainly because I let everybody copy off of me in school. People used to fight to sit next to me when there was a test. I think Michael J Fox made the yuppie/nerd/geek cool in that TV show Family Ties, and it did have to do with money. People realized being geeky and smart and wealthy was better than being cool and uninterested and poor. Of course it may have been Elvis Costello that made it cool… hmmm.
I have always been strangely attracted to geek typs :)
I am not so avrage myself, I can be neardy at times :D
a relative term, is it not? depends on a person’s definition of a nerd. What is a nerd to one person, make be a hero to the next person!
Easy solution, be kind and nice to all people. Makes life so much better.

Since some tv writers made them cool, like everything else…
Beats me, I wasnt aware they were, I guess it depends on where you live…
I would also assume that the nerdy custom has pervaded and escalated during the past few years. As far as social inactivity, well I wouldn’t say it applies to most nerds except the few who isolate themselves in their studies and devote their time ultimately, unto one particular subject. Asocial behavior in nerds is surely a myth now, although their are probably still a few who prefer a hermitage for comfort and see humanity as a distraction.
since popular people decided they had to use the real nerds’ name to gain even more popularity, like nerds needed yet another way to feel violated. ask me that again when I am reborn and have lived it up being a nerd, unlike what has actually happened to me on planet earth. i focking know an uncool nerd when i am one.
they still arent cool where i am, hence the lack of chicks

agreed. if it’s widely seen in the media, it suddenly becomes cool i guess.

I’m not sure Steve. I have a friend who is kind of nerdy but a hell of a guy. His wife says she has always been partial to nerdy guys.
I’m not really sure how to answer other than I really don’t know….lol. Kind of hard for me to think right now since I’m so tired…..
Maybe nerds have always been cool, but only to certain people.
ever since quantum came along :P
oooooooooor, ever since they became the ‘cute’ ones in early 90’s tv shows (sliders rings a bell…) the one’s that, if the guy/girl manages to convince him/her to take off the glasses, let the hair down and wear something a bit more close fitting they realise that the geek sector of the society is actually an untapped resource of millions of staggeringly hot incredibly good in bed sensitive little buggers.
oh the shocks when people found out that wasn’t the case :P but still, that idea was somewhat self propergating.
Since people realised they are actually WAY nicer than jocks and stuff. Cute, funny, smart, polite and potentially good earners - what’s not to love? And what girl DOESN’T want a guy she can “makeover” into something really hot?
[quote Why So Steve?]I would say that a large proportion of women want a partner, not a dress-up doll. quote]
That’s not what I meant. But girls like “projects”. And only clothes and stuff. Not total personality. And I vary whom I date - not just “men’s men”

Steve geeks become cool as soon as they hit 18-19 and go to college and are surrounded by other geeks. in highschool they are just geeks.
but in pop culture.. i think they became chic about 4 years ago, its mainly becuase a lot more people play computer games now. geeky activity’s are being done by traditionally cool people and so its kinda being hijacked. i think the term “Gimp” has replaced geek as the degrading label for us with above average IQ’s

neither would I. but at least in Scotland thats what has come to replace geek. Geek now being chic.

Well I’m a self professed geek. I love Science fiction I own a Warhammer army and I was an outcast at school really. I had friends, but it was odd. I despite being a geek am very very sporty and a really good footballer the jocks would pick me first for a team but wouldn’t hang around with me, The goths.. well I wasn’t Gothic enough. so there was a small band of people that liked Sci-Fi, comics and black comedies.
or.. the geeks, the future lawyers, bankers and IT guys. We genuinely liked music from the 80’s. we all played video games and spoke regularly about our favorite developers and games, we all drunk Pepsi max twist! and we all watched SG1 and startrek.
But hey I dressed in a pair of jeans/cons and a black shirt.. and I always had a pen, still do. pens are just useful.
I can say that definitively geek chic is big becuase of the 80’s, people love retro crap. obscure video games T shirts of games they never played, shows they never watched, movies they’ve never heard of. for some odd reason people born in the 1990’s loved that stuff?
Sitcoms became full of lovable geeks, JD in Scrubs (who incidentally I feel was based on me) The IT crowd in the UK and The big bang theory in the US. Video games are crossing the boundaries now too. Its now an acceptable cool thing to have, just like a huge TV or the latest band, consoles are cool now. The 80’s is the decade when the geeks rose to power, the like’s of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs. geeks were making big money and in positions of power. Still not cool though. But it has helped to connect the return of 80’s nostalgia with geek chic, geeks are 80’s and the 80’s are cool. so geeks by proxy at least are cool.
