What is wrong with my MSN?

Ok I’ve always noticed that msn has been getting progressively worse these days, always signing me out unexpectedly, or sometimes refusing to sign in at all. But right now I only seem to have one issue with it, it’s not signing me in on account of host related files. Error code: 80048820, and using the trouble shooter does jack all. I’m unsure of what my version of messenger is, I recently downloaded a newer version but I can find the name of it anywhere. I thought about removing it and installing it again or going back to an older version but I can’t even find it in the add or remove programs page. Any help please? I run Windows XP SP2.
