how to tell the counsellor what is wrong?

I really need to speak to one about various issues rather urgently. I’m a fiercely private person and hate to/cannot tell people things about myself.
Based on past experiences, I end up hating the counsellor after the first session because I feel too vulnerable/exposed and so, I don’t ever go back to see him/her again.

I have tried writing things down, printing out a ‘letter’ for the counsellor (which i never give anyway), rehearsing…I can’t seem to tell people about my problems even though i really want and need to. Once I’m in that room, I shut up and can only answer the counsellor’s questions in monosyllables or short phrases. I get the feeling the counsellor ends up getting really frustrated because he/she cannot get anything out of me!

help?

thanks!

I don’t really know how I overcame it really, I’m still really scared whenever I see the counsellor and it takes a while for me to open up each time. I guess I just put myself in a position where I knew I had to go and if I didn’t I’d get grief from people, so it was better to go to the counsellor and stick it out until I opened up instead of not going and face the never ending grief at home.

i had a counsellor too and i can open up to them but what i find hard is that i took a course in counselling also and read that they cant give advice but have to sit and listen and take notes sometimes and guide you. i found the silence unbearable as i was really embarrassed (however you spell it lol) but i realized they do that as they need you to open up to work on the problems and them talking might not give you the chance to do so. i know its hard but the best thing to do is open up they wont judge you and will not discuss your problems with anyone else, dont give up on the counsellor or hate them as they are there to help they just have to go by a technique they were trained for. and you may feel exposed but thats a good thing in there as your opening up and talking about your problems which you need to get to the bottom of! it will be worse at the beginning but will get better and they dont get frustrated thats there job to sit and listen and help you good luck!!

Hello,
:( Sorry to hear you feel this way, if their is anything I can do please let me know, the fact of the matter is that you need to tell the counsellor about how you feel about being afraid to open up and basically tel her/him everything you said here and they will take a different approach.
