I heard once that the best way to learn is with an instructor because things you read might not be good enough and you will start having bad form thats hard to correct later on

I myself dont play but want to so i cant help more than saying that

I’m learning how to play guitar too! :) It is true, its easier to learn with an instructer, but if your not serious you can just mess around on it some. Sometimes you can look up tab for certain songs online, but tab only works if you already know what the song sounds like.

If you want to know how to read music, go to your nearest music/instrument store and buy the lowest level guitar music book.

The one I have is “Guitar Method 1″ by Aaron Stang, the 21st Century Guitar Method. Mine doesn’t but some of the other aditions also have a CD included, showing you how to play the music.

An instructer is still the best way to go though.

You might also want to say if your learning electric or acoustic. They play slightly differently to an extent. Also you might want to say what genre or style your going for.

I think teaching yourself to play guitar is a much cheaper and more rewarding route to take. There are lots of resources available to learn guitar on your own.
