Last September my mom and my brother were in a really bad car accident.
My brother’s back was broken and my mom’s arm was torn to shreds and her knee was messed up pretty bad. They both had to receive emergency surgery. The problem is we don’t have any health insurance, and now my family owes a lot of money for hospital bills. My mom is 49 and my brother is 25. My mom will never be able to bend her elbow again, and what’s messed up is that there are surgeries that could probably fix it, but we don’t have the money to pay for them. My mom also can’t walk for very long because her knee still needs surgery. My brother has mild paralysis and has to use a catheter to use the restroom. He can walk, but not for long amounts of time, and he is trying to work at a gas station to bring in a little extra money because he doesn’t want to mooch off of my mother, considering she barely has enough money to pay the bills. My dad owns his own photography business which doesn’t make a whole lot. Before this my mother always worked too to make ends meet, now she can’t. My mom is depressed and has been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder. My brother hasn’t gone to talk to any kind of psychologist but recently told me that he was having suicidal thoughts and didn’t know what to do. Both my mom and brother are in the process of applying for disability and social security but those will take at least a couple of years and will in no way cover the surgeries my mother still needs. I’m a college student, and the only way I can afford college is with financial aid. I want to help my family but I don’t know what to do. Please can anyone give me any ideas?
