Hospital help: I am writing this to you as a final resort. - Help.com

I am writing this to you as a final resort.

My wife had a hysterectomy on January 15 and did not get any better afterwards. She had another surgery on March 9 and they found mesh inside of her that had been used to prevent adhesions inside of her. The surgery took 5-6 hours and they had to use tweezers to get everything out. She is still having problems with severe pain and bleeding. I work at Cox Communications here in Dodge City. She went over her FMLA limit of 12 weeks because of the situation and her work wanted to fire her for that. We have tried everything we can to stay afloat financially but things are looking very grim right now. We have a 6 year old daughter and a 3 year old son. If we lived in a big town i’m sure we could get assistance with rent or our vehicle payment but we live in SW Kansas. I feel very bad for my wife and my kids. We came home last week and founf my daughters dog dead in the backyard which was just another thing on top of everything else. We are a family that has been doing what we needed to do to weather this economic storm. This was supposed to be a routine surgery before but now we are in danger of losing everything because of this. I pray that you could help.

Hang in there. Things happen for a reason. Have faith through this difficult test. I am married with 4 children and have been out of work since last July. Just keeping my head up.

Robkris1, I had an emergency hysterectomy a few years back, mostly because numerous doctors didn’t think to look for a problem. I’ve got some research ideas, and will get back to you with something.

Meanwhile, please answer me these questions:

You’re NOT a homeowner?
How old are you and your wife?
Is your wife now back at work? (Is she being forced to work while in pain?)
How many children do you have and what are their ages?
Any other tidbits you can think to add …?

You might not hear back from me tonight, but don’t worry, I’ll be back. Meanwhile, hang in there. (Yeah, I know, way easier said than done.)

Is it possible that your family could get welfare of some sort? I know it’s not exactly what y’all had in mind to raise your kids with, but you might at least try.

Rob, more questions:

What have the doctors / hospital said about their screw-up?
What County do you live in?

(Just re-read your post and saw ages of your children. Sorry. Obviously, no need for you to answer that one again.)

We rent
I am 37 and my wife is 27
They are telling her she has to go back to work or they will fire her since all of her FMLA has been used

The doctors say this Surgiwrap is used commonly in these operations and dont cause problems it is just supposed to dissolve
I live in Ford county in Kansas.

We can’t get state assistance because my wife’s brother was fraudulently getting benefits from them about 5 years ago without our knowledge until we got letters saying we owed a total of over 26,000 dollars to them. Her brother died not too long after we found out. I have tried to get this taken off but the state isnt in any hurry to take care of it.

Rob, Sorry it too me this long and also sorry that I have to do this in bits and pieces.

My first approach to your problem would be to find a way of getting your wife’s FLMA extended. Go to the links below. Warning: You’ve got some reading and research to do, but it might pay off.

Some of the links below are redundant in the info they provide, but many provide blogs / forums / free advice. Posting your situation to any / all of the blogs just might lead you to some help.

I haven’t yet found anything negative regarding Surgiwrap … but no matter what her doctors / the hospital have to say, it’s pretty darn obvious that someone screwed up. I’d be surprised if you don’t have cause for a legitimate lawsuit.

Later tonight, I’ll see what free / low cost legal advice there might be for you in your neck of the woods.

Meanwhile, take a deep breath, start reading and posting to the blogs and hang in there.
