Adult Women Only–I need a woman’s opinion on something that I read that seems quite unrealistic
I am reading a book from Dean Koontz. In the story, a 40 yr old woman kidnaps a 12 year old boy. She approaches him from behind and covers his mouth with her hand to keep him quiet from the neighbors.
I am a writer and I pay lots of attention to detail. I find this quite unrealistic since women have small hands. The boy is 4′10 and weighs 82 lbs. His nose and mouth are a mere 1cm apart.
Do you think it is realistic that a woman’s hand is big enough to cover a boys mouth with her hand to keep him quiet? How close to his nose might your hand come? Do you think the boy would be forced to smell her hand against his will if she kept him quiet? His nose and mouth are a quarter of an inch apart. Explain your answer. Is your hand small or adult sized?
Female writers, authors, journalists or avid readers are encouraged to answer. The most detailed answer will get awarded with best answer. Thanks so much:)

lol im just kidding.
wow! how long does it take you to read a book?!
Does it say how old the 40 year old is? what is her ethnic background? it’s fully possible…
a woman’s hand WILL cover the mouth of a kid, the issue you should be asking is how long can she do it for… 12 year old boys are pretty active and strong enough i’d say to get out of reach of a 40 year old woman.. and if it’s the average 40 year old, i’d say the kid could run circles around her too.. (i.e. get away from her)
Yes it’s possible, but i doubt it could be done for very long…
well ok, an odd one, but i have tiny hands and i can cover my own mouth and nose.
shhh….dont tell anyone but my hands are MAN HANDS, not every woman fits the standard. Mine are just as big as my older brothers and im mid-20’s…and yes my hands could actually cover an adult man’s mouth AND nose. (i’ve tried with my fiance…) dont ask..lol

My comment sounds VERY weird… i have two 10 year old brothers and they fight with my girlfriend..! just clearing that up!
Janeywaney and 00 I love you 00–Great answers! However I was hoping you were going to answer each question in my post in detail to support your argument.
Both of you claim your hand is big enough to cover the boy’s mouth to keep him quiet.
So, if you covered his mouth from behind, how close to his nose might your hand come? Again, his nose and mouth are 1 cm apart and he is 4′10 and weighs 82 lbs
What part of your hand would come closest to his nose?
And do you think the boy would have to smell your hand against his will as you keep him quiet with your hand? Explain why.
Best Answer will go to the most detailed responder. Thanks guys!

Unless they physically do it now, they’re only going to be guessing shopwurld4u…
if the woman is taller than the boy, her hand placement will be totally different, you need to be slightly more specific!
Yes the boy will be smelling her hand… his nose is 1cm away from his mouth… the woman would be touching his nose too i reckon..
RONKFISHS! Notice how I prefaced this question with Adult Women Only. The assailant in this book was not a man, thus I need the opinion from a woman. Thanks but no thanks.
I should imagine the womans index finger would be pressed against his nose and thumb would be pressed pretty hard into his cheek. I think it would be possible to apply enough pressure to the kids lips and front teeth that making much movement with his mouth would be hard and probably a bit painful.
The kid would be scared and as his mouth was covered he would be inhaling deeply through his nose, but he would only smell the woman if she had a distinctive smell on her hands.
I have average sized hands and a big mouth and I can easily cover my mouth. So a 12 yr old boy wouldnt be that difficult.
Yeah, I just grabbed my own face to try and work that out lol.
this exact question was asked on answerology(.)com… came across it…
I’m a huge fan of Dean Koontz books.. forever odd right?? i don’t remember, i read a most of his books..
I had a discussion about him before and this part came up… just relaying the info…
PheeGee–Great response!
Sounds like you’re confident that your hand could keep this boy quiet.
So based upon the size of your hand, what part of your hand would the boy be forced to smell? (assume your hand smells like soap)
Would the boy be able to scream for help to your neighbors? What kind of noise could he make?
And, is there a chance your hand could end up smelling like spit eventually from all his attempts to scream? Why is he most like to smell spit from your hand if he moves his head all around?
Loved the detail. i look forward to your next response.
Okay, I disturbed myself trying to think about this then but whatever.
The kid would have to smell either the skin on the part of the woman’s hand that attached the thumb to the rest of the hand on the inside of the thumb or along the first knuckle of the index finger. Screaming would be difficult, it would be a screech and words would be very very hard to distinguish, it would probably sound more like an animal than a person.
If the child had his mouth open when he was grabbed then it is highly likely the woman would get spit on her hand, as well as bitemarks. The kid would have a rush of adrenaline because he would go into fight or flight mode and so more than likely more spit would be produced than usual, so if he had his mouth open this would all go on her hand and seep through the indentations of her palm, possibly being pushed up closer to the boys nose. If he had his mouth closed spit might be pushed out through his lips meaning that it would probably be less and making him smelling it less likely.
Ive actually worried myself by writing all this now lol.
lol PheeGee. It’s all in good fun.
Anyways, you must be a writer. Your explanations are wonderful and quite detailed.
Now, we already established that your hand will begin to smell like spit due to the boy’s attempts to scream for help against your palm.
However, if your palm remains only over his mouth, isn’t he more likely to smell the edge of your index finger rather than his own spit? Why is he more likely to smell his own spit IF he moves his head all around? What kind of contact might the boy’s nose make with your palm briefly at times during the struggle that would cause him to smell his own spit? lastly, if the boy was able to get your hand away for a moment before you recovered his mouth, and he protested about the smell of your hand and shouted, “ewwww, you’re so gross! your hand smells like spit!”, how would you respond? Remember, the boy is barely 10 years old so he won’t understand why he is smelling spit. How would you explain this to him in a way that he would understand? Perhaps you can use this to your advantage in convincing the boy to keep his mouth shut and not to struggle.
You must be a writer. You’ll have to excuse my attention to detail. My imagination runs wild sometimes:) I can’t wait for your next answer. You’re defintately getting the best response award:)
Haha Im not a writer, I am awful at holding a story.
Ok, look at your hand. There are lines and creases going up to the edges of your palms and on your fingers. If the boy was still the spit would pool whereas if he moved he would be pushing the saliva through the lines of the hand. Forcing it out to the edges, if there was enough it would end up down his chin and along the top of her hands. I imagine that if the boy struggled enough to get himself slightly free the woman’s hand would clamp down again as quickly as possible, this would make it less exact and she would possibly wipe across his nose as he moved. Also as the woman would presumably be taller than this child as he forced out of her grasp he would have probably pushed his head down and away from her which would cause her hand to drag across his nose.
If I was in that situation and I was taking this child against his will I wouldn’t try to explain to the child, only ensure that anyone nearby wouldn’t hear that and guess what was happening so I would probably laugh loudly and and tell him he was being silly then immediately try to cover his mouth again. Im afraid that I have no idea whatsoever as to how I would explain it to him and try to persuade him not to struggle. I suppose I would tell him something about his parents needing something or make a threat.
Sorry if that last one wasn’t as much use. But it was a difficult question lol
You’re good. What is your age? What is your height and weight? Is your hand small or adult sized?
If the child said, ‘ewwwwww, your hand smells like spit! you’re so gross’, how would you explain to him why your hand smells like spit? And how would you explain to him why moving his head all around makes this more likely that he’ll smell his own spit? Since the child doesn’t like smelling his own spit, you may wish to use this to your advantage. If the boy understands why he’s smelling his own spit, he may keep quiet and stop moving around.
Also you say the palm may slip and come over the nose at times? What part of the palm? How long would the palm remain over the nose? And after the palm resumes normal position over the mouth, how long would the smell of his spit linger in his nostrils before the smell went away?
Also, would you consider smothering the boy momentarily if he made too much noise? How would you position your hand? And what would you say to him as you cut off air supply to his nose and mouth?
I can actually imagine this because you’re so articulate and detailed. I cannot wait for your next answer. Just be deliberate and precise with my questions.
See, its at this point that I feel uncomfotable about answering the questions. Besides, as a writer it is your job to think up the answers to these things. If you can imagine this then you have to use your imagination to finish it, consider it an exercise in your writing ability. Also Im getting way too freaked out by typing it up. So I apologise but Im unsubscribing. Good luck with figuring it out.
I completely understand and I appreciate your responses. They were great!
I understand. Thanks so much for replying though. They were great!
I understand. Great posts! Thanks so much.
lol, in response to your earlier response to my answer, it was not an argument! it was a fact. lol. My hands are extremely small and i can cover my mouth and nose.
Janeywaney.
If you covered the boys mouth from behind, how close to his nose would your hand come?
What part of your hand would be nearest his nose?
And do you think the boy would be forced to smell your hand based upon how it was positioned? explain why.
Like Pheegee, explain in detail. Thanks:)
I think if you come from behind, you will cover the mouth fully only if you’ll put all of your fingers and thumb together so the victim’s nose would be almost covered too with your thumb and would not be able to smell anything. If you want to cover the victim’s mouth and nose all at once with your palm, the victim could smell the middle of your palm and will be able to free him/herself and shout too. Third scenario: if your thumb and pointing finger cover the nose of the victim tight while the leftover three fingers covers the mouth, not only the victim would not be able to breathe, but also cannot smell anything, and would not be able to shout either for help.
Great Response Beatrice
Let’s take your hand for example.
If you kidnapped this boy and covered his mouth from behind, how close to his nostrils might your hand come?
What exact part of YOUR hand would come closest to his nose?
And based upon how YOU position your hand, do you think the boy would be forced to smell your hand against his will? Explain why he wouldn’t have a choice?
Also, do you think the boy could scream for help to your neighbors against your palm? How much noise could he make?
Great answer:) sounds like you’re a writer too. I look forward to your next response:)
His nostrils will be covered with a thumb and the middle part of the pointing finger and would be pushed so hard he would not be able to breathe, let along smell anything. He wouldn’t be able to scream or nobody would be able to hear him because the palm would be rounded against his mouth so tight that air would not be able to come and go freely and without air, voice would not be heard.
Wow! So are you implying that you’d smother the boy? If he can’t breathe, you’ll smother him. For how long do you not allow the boy to breathe for? What would you say to the boy? If the boy agreed to cooperate, how would you reposition your hand? And as you reposition your hand, why would he then be forced to smell your hand? What part of your hand specifically would he be forced to smell? Is there a chance that as the boy screams for help, that that could backfire on the boy and cause him to smell his own spit? Explain how.
The more detailed you are with each question, the better. Use complete sentences with each answer. You’re excellent.
By the way, how old are you? And what is your height and weight so I can compare with the assailant in the story. :)
Never ask a woman of her age. Let’s just say I am not old but I won’t be considered a spring chick either. 5′5″ and 137. I can’t answer to any of those questions. What answers I gave you is what I learned in one of those forensic investigation classes.
How would a forensic class teach you about placement of your hand over a boy’s mouth? They’d never teach you about forcing the boy to smell his own spit.
You would not believe what else they teach you there. It is not only the detail but also the technique what makes your case a lesson for those who are learning to become investigators.
When I was an 11 year old boy I had a brief physical confrontation with a heavy set 40ish year old woman and I was more than able to handle it. I think a average 10 year old boy in good health would be able to get away from most women especially if he was frightened.
I agree chuckwildma!
