Should I go back to my law degree?

2yrs into a 6yr undergraduate language/law course, I took a leave of absence to go study humanities and subjects I am passionate about at another university, which I was really missing while studying law. I was planning to finish the humanities degree and take the time to plan what I really wanted to do with my life, and then do postgraduate study, whether it be in law, or something else.

But now I’m starting to get cold feet, and having thoughts about going back to my old law degree. I just keep thinking, if I’m going to end up studying it postgraduate anyway, maybe I should just go back and finish the degree now, because at least I will have all my friends there.

I did not really enjoy studying law. And I do not want a career in law or as a lawyer. I find it too dry, too boring. I want to do something more creative than sit behind a desk all day making money. However, I thought that maybe if I had a law degree, I could translate it into a career that helps people, and is interesting, since law has so many “opportunities”. But does it really have opportunities? I worry that even if I rejected a corporate law career and was doing legal aid work, etc, I would still find it boring and uninspiring because I don’t like the technical and almost mathematical-like processes that involve working in law.

On one hand, studying humanities isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and I’ve realized I don’t need to spend 3 yrs studying literature to be able to appreciate it. While the subjects are interesting, studying them feels pointless. On the other hand, I don’t want to go back to a degree I haven’t enjoyed so far and rather struggle with, unless I’m sure it actually opens doors which don’t involve a career in law, or anything legal related.

i dont think you should go back to your law degree if you already know that its not what you wanna do - no point wasting time and money…

and im not an expert but i dont see any other opportunities other than jobs that are somehow related to law for lawyers…

Coincidentally, I’m also planning to pursue law school once I get to that particular stage. As of now, I’m still in college trying to conquer my preliminary subjects and then hopefully transfer to a 4-year university and major in something interesting. From my understanding, it’s admissible to embark on any degree in which you so desire before proceeding to law school. I’ve only researched the information pertaining to such course of action briefly, but I would also be delighted to have that piece of information officially confirmed.

In your case, I advise you to stick with your guns and not choose anything you will potentially regret. Law offers many diverse fields of study for people in pursuit. I personally plan to chase criminal law so long as my interest doesn’t retract over the next few years. The biggest fear I think for most people, is the uncertainty involved with choosing a career destination and then follow it in the mere hope that it isn’t all a disappointment.
