I have a problem, a terrible awful hellish problem.

I have this awful urge to violently strike people that do not use proper spelling and punctuation. I know… It’s awful. I really need to learn to control myself.

Or, perhaps, just thinking out loud here. The serial offenders, imbeciles, whatever you want to call them, could use one of the MANY programs out there, for example there is an add-on in firefox that automatically spell checks your writing as you type it! Wow, amazing, eh guys?

If they did that, golly gosh would I feel good. Stress would dissipate, headaches from trying to work out what the hell some people mean would disappear.

Does anybody else have this problem? I’m sure I’m not alone in this…

Why didn’t you use the program you mentioned then?

I think you need to reread the post.

I don’t have a problem with my spelling, it’s people that cannot spell/use grammar properly that irritates me.

I prefer to read a proper sentence, but it doesn’t bother me. As long as I know what they’re saying, I’m fine.

I understand what you’re saying though. I have a problem with miss-worded sentences, like “Yesterday Night”… That one bothers me.

I know what you mean. Spelling and punctuation when mis-used or un-used is frustrating. Though It would be unfair of me to punish those who are slack on this end of the spectrum.. For alas I am myself a serial mispeller.

Are you a perfectionist? The sad thing is perfectionists not only beat up others for silly things like not obeying rules, but they also beat themselves up on a regular basis. By treating themselves badly they think they have licence to treat others badly as well. If you don’t understand a post you are free to ignore it.

Hmmm I would say, most spelling mistakes and bad grammar are due to rushing or simple laziness.

It is the wrong website to scrutinize people for their literary prowess. But I do like a well organised sentence now and again.

For example;

Or, perhaps, just thinking out loud here. The serial offenders, imbeciles, whatever you want to call them, could use one of the MANY programs out there, for example there is an add-on in firefox that automatically spell checks your writing as you type it!

Would sound much better if it were organised thus.

Or, perhaps, just thinking out loud here;(inserted semi-colon instead of full stop. Its a continuation of thought) The serial offenders, imbeciles or (using a verbal trajectory instead of punctuation makes it flow better) whatever you want to call them, could use one of the MANY programs out there. (full stop instead of comma. Its a start of something new) for example there is an add-on in firefox that automatically spell checks your writing as you type it!

It would be unfair to punish them, you’re right. However it doesn’t help the urge lol.

I wouldn’t say that I was a perfectionist, I don’t think that treating myself badly gives me reason to treat others badly, you assume that I treat myself badly in the first place, which is incorrect. I haven’t insulted anyone specifically, I’ve just made a pretty well illustrated point about a lack of good spelling and grammar infuriating me. Being able to spell correctly is something that is required of children, let alone people offering ‘help’.

Maybe my sarcasm didn’t quite cross the pond properly, but I was using humour to make light of a grievance that could be easily resolved, and tried to provide a resolution for those who cannot spell/use punctuation properly, which would thus teach them to better themselves.

Hehe Knight_edg, as you pointed out, I was rushing! A semi-colon could also have been used ;)

I found referring to people who can’t spell correctly imbeciles insulting and i do not see how being able to spell correctly is a prerequisite of offering others help of any kind.

LOL - I’m sure people would concentrate alot more if the blonde was their English teacher. I know I would, and I loved English!

Though, I’d like to point out that while the guy doesn’t have the best command of the English language, the subtitler has done their best to spell everything correctly and the song reflects the now common use of “bad gramma’” lol.

Wow, you’re insulted, eh? There’s nothing wrong with your spelling, I can understand you.

My point about writing clearly (i.e, using correct spelling and punctuation) being a basic for someone offering others help is this. When was the last time you saw a reply in a newspaper/magazine problem page spelt incorrectly or the grammar all over the shop? You don’t. Because people need to be able to read it clearly from the off, not reread and reread trying to establish what the writer was trying to say.

I’m quite surprised you’re condoning the use of bad spelling and punctuation, wuld u pferr i skpe lik dis?

And to clarify, I’m teasing you! Joking, making fun. Ha ha?

I think Miss Jessica Bunny was simply stating a pet peeve. Until laws condemn those who cant spell correctly are enforced. It will simply have to go un-noticed.

Everyone can spell when they want to!

Knight-edg! You’ve done it! You’re a genius! We SHOULD pass a law enforcing people to spell correctly. I’ll be referencing you in my petition to send off to number 10… ;)

I didn’t actually say i was insulted. I said i found you referring to people who can not spell correctly imbeciles insulting. To be honest when people on here are offering advice, solutions or just a shoulder to cry on the last thing i care about is their level of spelling ability. I do not condone the use of bad spelling, in fact i don’t give it much thought and i certainly do not stress out over it.

So… that means you were insulted. You found something insulting, therefore, you were insulted.

Screw “Free Speech”, I’m campaigning for “Better Speech!” (along with better speechmarks, full stops, semi-colons….)

Hehe, I can’t wait!

Make sure it’s not one of those modern dictionaries though, ones with words like “braapppp” and “wagwan” in them. ‘Proper’ English language only, no slaaaang.

I’ll take a copy of shakespeare’s works. That will surley makes things more colourful.

Fantastic idea!

Our mantra could be

“A victory is twice itself when the achiever brings home full numbers.”

Also, when people try defend their poor spelling/grammar we could retort with “A bird of my tongue is better than a beast of yours.”

We’d be sure to confuse a hell of alot of people.

Do some linguistic research, find out how grammar and spelling developes throughout the history of language. The terrible spelling and grammar mistakes that are becoming common on the internet - that is the way new languages develop. Speaking of which, most of what we think of as “correct” in modern English is just a corruption of older versions of “correct”. We’re all have poor grammar and spelling by the standards of some time, so chill :)

Interesting post!
But, as long as its legible, then Im cool with it!
To err is human!
And as khalivarsha said language evolves…
Like, look at your last post Miss Bunny, over there you use the word mantra which actually originated in Indian languages, most porbably Sanskrit and then Hindi before it came to english and within the last two centuries… and sounds similar but not the same as it should in its original tounge…
But, yeah! prepfer it to be legible and understandable upon the first read without too much brain work!
