I always try to read/watch videos to try to inspire myself, to feel better. - Help.com

I always try to read/watch videos to try to inspire myself, to feel better.

A lot of them tell you to “focus on the good inside of yourself,” but I feel like I am rotten and bad on the inside. I want to change so desperately, to be someone happy and carefree, but I feel like I have nothing to work with. How can I feel any different?

Look at why you feel unhappy and rotten. Although watching a movie may cheer you up, ultimately it’s a distraction from what you’re really feeling. Once you understand exactly why you feel like you do, and you embrace your unhappiness, only then you can move on to be happy.

I feel rotten because of situations I have been through in the past. I am young, only 18 and have a past that I am not at all proud of. I can blame it my actions on so many things, but in the end it doesn’t help me feel better. I am doing so much to make myself a better person, but it seems like I will be forever tainted by my past.

I can relate to you a lot, and I am of a similar age (16) but you need to understand more to embrace it. Once you embrace it you will feel more free. What I would recommend is some sort of therapy. This may seem drastic, but this may help you move on.
