I’d think of it like this: if you were talking about going somewhere with someone it would be “Cherry and I are going to the movies” as opposed to “Cherry and Me are going to the movies” i think the same rules apply for this one.

“it was I” is the right one. my english teacher gave us a good rule of thumb. convert it to a simple sentence and see which one is right.. generally thats the correct one. so for this you would say “I brought about my own anguish” or “Me brought about my own anguish” and decide from there.
