Ed and Alice walked to the dock at 5 miles per hour, jumped into the boat, and motored to Destin at 15mph. If the total trip was 20 miles and the trip took two hours in all, how far did they go by boat?

it’s a distance problem. There is something like D=R*T is the equation

5 miles in an hour, and 15 miles in an hour adds to make 20 miles in an hour. What a coincidence, the distance is 20 miles. It took an hour for 20 miles. If they took a two hour trip, it would stand to reason (at least in my mind) that it was 40 miles. Anyone dispute that? I am just guessing.

D (distance)= R(rate) X T(time)
D = 20 x 2 (hrs)
D = 40
makes sense to me.

Jessie:
Don’t be nervous. purplemath.com is a great algebra site that I use all the time when I don’t understand what my book is telling me. just type in what you want to do and it explains it clearly. It is important that you know how to do it, not just know the answer.
