Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
I went to Ireland for 2 weeks and it cost me about $2000 including the plane ticket. This was a couple years ago when the exchange rate wasn’t as good so now it would probably cost more like $1500. I stayed in hostels and they were pretty nice. I booked in advance which gets you a better price (sometimes) also, before you go whether you book in advance or not you should go to Hostelworld.com. They have a list of hostels for most places in Europe, it is reliable and the ratings tell you what you need to know. Don’t stay in a hostel with a bad rating. There is a reason why it has a bad rating. And the ones with bad ratings aren’t cheaper either.
Do it! Go! Leave enough money somewhere safe to make sure you can get home, and then leave. If everything goes to ****, and you need to get home, use the money. More likely you’ll have the time of your life.
I’ve backpacked through Europe and Africa, and I can tell you, you’ll never be the same.
Hostels are awesome, as long as you have appropriate expectations (not luxury). $3000 will probably cover the flight overseas (if you’re from the U.S.), a eurail pass, and about 2 weeks’ worth of daily expenses.
Europe is not the safest place for young travelers. I suggest you do some research and follow the advice of those that have come before you to protect yourself. Have fun! And you’re right, this will be one of the best things you ever do!
you can start with google, or check a backpacking book out of the library or pick one up at a bookstore
Is there anywhere in particular you know you want to go? It is really easy to get from country to country in Europe even flying from Scotland to Ireland was like $50. Make sure you carry your passport on you at all times and not in a purse or backpack. When I say on you I mean on you. Keep it around your neck or in one of the special fanny pack things that you can keep hidden under your clothes. (Target has them) I also kept extra cash and my credit card there so that I knew they were safe. These are your lifelines if bad things happen. Also, you should make sure you have a copy of your passport and credit card(s) in case you do lose them and you should make sure a relative or friend has them back home also.
buy the Lonely planet book for europe, thats the bible for backpackers, everything you need to know is there, anything from cheap hostels to places to eat, to clubs, etc
here’s the website, but make sure to buy the book

Ah, so many things to see…where to begin?
Scandinavia has beautiful nature and some nice villages and capital cities too.
And it has free camping.
Beautiful in the summer and in winter when it snows.
Edinburrow is a nice old city.
Gent (Belgium)
Maastricht (Netherlands)
Paris, Prague, Barcelona, Rome, Athens, Istanbul.
Pyrenees (mountains between France and Spain) are very nice for hiking.
You can never see it all, but you can see a lot.
Eurolines busses can be a good cheap way to travel, as are trains.
Hostels are perfectly OK, though in some places still kind of expensive.
Camping can be a bit cheaper, but if it’s nice depends on the weather
I have a friend that is getting ready to go to Europe backpacking…….. I can give you a few websites……… I will bbl to get them to you.

lol, poor u. i feel antsy and want to just pack everything and go travel but i figured same. i wouldnt b able to afford it and i hav some unresolved personal issues
Brilliannt idea I waved goodbye to a friend that went by herself yesterday from UK to Australia and i myself go in 6 weeks time, the exchange rate is expensive in europe but if you research well you will find cheap places and once you set of you will meet plenty of people who will advise you on the way too. London is aparently the most expensive city in the world but fun, Barcelona is gorgeous, Dublin is great but expensive, but it will be worth it

Backpacking in Europe
I have a couple of grand and i can pay rent a few months in advance to off set the not having a job part when i come back home, i figure i will have roughly 3000$ to spend. Is that realistic, i will be going alone. I want to get out of this depression that i am in and i think that an adventure would be nothing less than the best thing i could ever do for myself. I would need to stay in hostels, has anyone had experiences in hostels? i am excited at the thought of doing this yet it causes me some anxiety when i think of what could go wrong.
