I have recently began training as a recruit fireman, I am delighted to have finally gotten my dream job.

But there is another new guy who is exactly the kind of person who shouldn’t have been accepted. This guy is bringing morale down to zero, he is not a team player, he tries to undermine everybody by attempting to outdo them at their own skills and wants to be given credit for everything. He tries to avoid all the hard work and only ever wants to get involved in tasks where he can be seen to impress the officers, for example driving, repair work, voluntary duties, PR duties etc. Last week I was repairing the engine on the fire truck when this guy comes along and blatantly tries to take over the show. He then told the officers behind my back that he had repaired the truck. He has done kind of stuff on other crew members too. Any ideas on how to deal with this guy?

The truth will eventually come out. Is everybody seeing what kind of guy this is? Don’t worry about what he does, you worry about what you do. From the sounds of it, sounds like this guy will be a major trouble maker. And, in your kind of work, maybe dangerous to work with. I would just keep a good eye on him and every time he does something wrong, document, document, document. At least that’s what I was taught in the military. More than a couple of trouble makers ended up getting the boot because their shenanigans were well documented when it came time for review of their performance or promotion.
