If a collection agency sends you a bill for something that happened almost 3 years ago, what do you do with it? - Help.com

If a collection agency sends you a bill for something that happened almost 3 years ago, what do you do with it?

Seriously, isn’t there a statute of limitations or something that prevents people form doing this? I don’t even recall the Doctor and I had sufficient health insurance at that time.

Firstly I would call the agency and ask them to explan in full why you are getting this bill and you would like a full report.
see if everything works out to the best of your knowledge if everything’s on the up and up then cool if not and you have no money to pay for it, tell ‘em to kiss it and toss it in the trash.

Thank Armond. I wrote a letter saying much of the same thing. I thought it there was a limitation when ppl had to stop. I never got a bill from this doctor and never heard anything until yesterday when I got the mail. I was surprised. I’m never late with my bills.

It really sounds like a scam, be carefull.
if you are not late with your bills, you most likely have a high credit rating which some people are pull up and it’s legit and they are just looking for someone to scam….. I’ve heard of this happen to a few older people… on T.V and it also happend to my god mother and my mother in law.

I would contact the agency and get as much information as possible about this “bill” they say you did not pay. I say this because there is so much identity theft around these days and you want to make sure that is not the reason for the bill. When you get the information see if it was something that could possibly be a true bill of yours. I do not think you are liable to pay anyway after so much time has passed but you want to make sure someone else is not using your name and credit.

If necessary get legal advice on this - or at the very least I would get your credit checked. You can get a free personal credit check once a year.

most of the time they negotiate the bill with you and can eventually pay a 3rd of it aft negotiations. GOOD LUCK!

The statute of limitations is 6 years where I live (depending on the type of bill).
