That week’s over…

Yay!
So post is closed! :):)

I could have had a better week…

How stressful it’s been! But it had all started really quietly (At least that’s what I thought!) as I noticed a cute deer hanging out in my backyard, keeping my dog company.

It was all so nice to see them chillin’ together… I started feeding the deer some carrots. Deers love carrots! But then again so does my dog! I hand fed it, took 50 & some pictures. Everything was dandy!

At some point, I decided to call the wildlife preservation people, thinking they could capture it and take it back to the woods. But when the guy got here, he told me it wasn’t a wild one, that it had been on a farm and was exotic so I only had two options: either I find someone who will capture it and keep it or they shoot it down!

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love animals! So on the same day, I find someone who’s interested in keeping it. He goes to get the necessary permit and takes his trailer here. I thought at this point, that everything was going swell! It turns out this guy has no idea what he’s doing and doesn’t know how to capture it, although he already has pigs and deers and lamas on his farm! So he leaves the trailer in my yard with a trail of carrots leading all the way to the back of it. It stays there over the weekend. But it seems this deer isn’t as dumb as one would think. Something tells me he had seen trailers before and was in no way interested in going inside there!

Well, the deer only showed up the next morning when I saw it standing right over my poor pooch, looking down at it, with its hooves touching my poor doggy’s legs as he was trying to avoid eye contact with it. You see, the problem was, my dog had trouble getting back up on his legs since he had been bumped in and was feeling so vulnerable that I heard him crying out to me so that I would get him out of this unfortunate and slightly scary situation he was in. That’s when I tried to get the deer’s attention, calling it, bearing carrot in hand. Hmmm… carrots! It worked and it followed me to the back of the yard. But little did I know that this d*** buck had just risen from his slumber and was feeling up to a challenge that morning! There I was offering it carrots when I suddenly see it rising up on its back legs, tilting its head towards me, getting ready to charge! I was never so scared in my life! And God knows I’ve done some wild things before… So I jumped on top of a high stack of logs that was luckily at the left of me. I was so frightened, boyfriend had to come and get me with the car!

The thing a lot of people don’t know is that the hooves of deers are like razor blades and they can stomp you to death with them, leaving a bloody mess all over or, if you’re lucky, you might simply get away with major cuts all over your face and body! Scary animal! That day, I locked myself inside the house with my dog. And that d*** dear, still very much interested in the dog, was walking around the house looking into every window. That was nothing short of eerie!

Well, we didn’t see it for a couple of days after that…. until we had the guy take his trailer away. I wasn’t feeling so safe around it anymore. So I didn’t dare walk outside, especially at night. This animal is so quiet, it can appear right behind you, like a ghost, when you least expect it. So not knowing if it was still in the neighborhood or not, I had to keep my dog locked inside a barn at night for his own safety. He hasn’t been trained for staying inside the house. I tried that and ended up mopping the floor all day. That was fun! … Not really!

Yesterday morning, I wake up and see it standing there next to my neighbor on his front lawn. He and his wife were feeding it apples. So I give them a call to warn them of the danger and tell them to go back inside the house for their safety. That’s when I stepped out, gathered all my courage and attracted it to my place. Then I called the wildlife preservation guys with a totally different idea in mind. This nightmare had to come to an end. It took them an hour to get here… A whole excrutiatingly long hour during which I was doing all in my power to keep the deer busy, feeding it carrots, talking to it, having the dog bark back from inside the barn, so that it wouldn’t run away….

They finally got here! And I will spare you the details ’cause I’m no hunter and I hate this kind of stuff. But even though the deer was standing only two or three feet from them, they didn’t shoot it exactly in the right place and it ran off to the back of the yard where it fell. Man! I felt so bad! I felt like a traitor… but I had no other choice!

It took them one more shot to finish the job. And these people do this for a living! They are supposed to be trained, right?!

Really ****** week! But at least now, I can walk outside safely…

I’m telling you all this so that you be careful when you’re out in the wilderness. It’s not Disneyworld out there and you better be equipped to defend yourself… just in case something unexpected pops up.

I am glad you and your dog are safe from the dear.

My Grandmother was attacked by a dear when she was a young women. She heard a noise on her trailer and when she came out, it attacked her. It punctured her with its antlers. She held on to the antlers while it thrashed her around. Being I was young when she told me about it, I do not remember how she got away. I remember her showing me a newspaper article she had saved about it.

It is a beautiful animal to look. Your dog is beautiful too.

I just didn’t realize how dangerous it could be although it looks so cute and harmless… I’ve learned my lesson. Believe me.

Thanks for your comment, Babacup. :)

Marylou, what a story!

I had no idea that deer could be so aggressive; they look such gentle passive creatures, more ready to run away than charge.
I’m so glad you weren’t harmed or your dog (who, btw, looks gorgeous)
Don’t feel bad; like you said, you had no choice.

Hope you have a better week next week

Island :)x

MaryLou,
This helper knows how hard you tried to find a solution. You called shelters, read tag numbers to your game wardens to locate the owner, you banged pots and pans, you organized your neighbors and did your best.

This animal lost its fear of man and became dangerous. He tried to establish your territory, as his, and run you all off, threatening bodily harm or even death. Once it started that, you had no choice. Kill or be killed was your choice, his choice, flight or fight, he choose fight.

You have seen the size of the animals I deal with. I have to be careful too, particullary in the fall, when the Moose, Deer, and Elk are in the rut. Living in the country, up here, has taught me much. Don’t feed the bears, be careful what you invite in, and respecting eachothers space, really has good meaning. It is for our own protection and for the animals well being. When world’s collide… You know?

Too bad your neighbors were feeding it for weeks and it then became your problem, and you had the tough decision. Rest assure Marylou, I still see you as a fine person that just had to make a tough call. It was attacking, and your good dog did his best to remain aloof, even injured, much to his credit, and still it kept attacking. We love you and respect the tough decision you faced with grace, and compassion and kindness. ~Hugs~ Greeneyes

Wow! I had no idea how dangerous a deer can be, either. They appear to be so docile. I will certainly pass your story on to my adventurous grandsons. They need to know.
Marylou, you were wonderful to try to place the deer with in a proper location, even though it did not work out.
I wonder where that exotic deer came from? I would hate to think that someone turned it loose to fend for itself after having tried to domesticate it. My daughter, who lives on a dairy, has found many animals abandoned on the property by people who no longer wish to care for them. I guess they think the farm families can take in out-of-control animals. I wish they knew how hard those dairy farmers work to care for their cows. It they knew, they would never drop off an extra animal without asking.

There is a reason it’s called wildlife. I’m sorry for what you’ve gone through, I know there was an emotional toll involved too, but you did the right thing. Don’t feel guilty over it, the deer made a choice to enlarge his territory by adding yours to his. Little did he know you were smarter than the average deer, LOL.. Sorry, it happened but glad you came through it in one piece. Take care..

B is right, that’s why its called wildlife, but the wildlife home is becoming short,as many continues to build and build. The homes for these creatures are becoming less available, and we wonder why they have to come onto human soil to eat and to survive.
I, at times think that man wont be happy until we have filled every scrap of wilderness with bricks and mortar, and every creature is extinct. As we all know its all about survival now for man and beast. Sadly both are paying with their lives.

Well Sans, there was something particular about this one and that is that it had been domesticated at some point. And that’s the reason it wasn’t interested in escaping to the woods and was hanging around people. That’s what was familiar territory to it.

Usually, wild deers might come and eat food that we leave for them when the winters are particularly rough but they instinctly go back to where they came from.

But domesticated or not, you have to be careful around them because their instinct is something they never loose. They are very nervous creatures and it might not take much for them to feel threatened. And when they do, they will either run or they’ll attack. You never know…

That was a great story Marylou. I had no idea that deer could be so aggressive; they look like such tame creatures. It’s sad what they had to do to the deer but you’ve got to put your own safety first.

I’m glad that both you and your dog safe. I wouldn’t like to have been in that situation; I bet it was really scary.

Yes Elysium, I had no idea deer could be that aggressive myself. I guess first impressions can sometimes be deceiving. But now we do know better!

Smooge, the deer was taken to a local organization that will use it to feed hungry people in the area. Lucky guys, I suppose!
I really couldn’t have eaten it myself considering we had sort of been “pals” for a while… you know?! :|

That week’s over(Yay!)so post is closed!
