Clarinet wrist.

I play clarinet, and I’ve been playing for about 5 years now. I started taking lessons about a month ago, so I’ve been practicing a lot more lately. I would feel pain in my wrists (particularly the right one) before, but it gets worse now. I am welll aware that this is a consequence of playing too much. I am only wondering if there are any ways to prevent long-term damage. As of now, I ice my wrists every time after I play, and I will sometimes wear a theraputic heating wrist thing to bed (if I had practiced a lot that day). Anyway, I was just wondering if icing after playing and the heating thing will help reduce/prevent long-term damage, or if there is something better I can do. Thank you in advance!! =D

it actually depends how much you play. I have a friend who plays clarinet and he had the same problem you did. I get pains in my fingers after i play my flute for extended pierods of time. what my friend did is that he did the ice thingi and thereaputic pads to bed for some time. After that he went to his doctor and asked what was up with his hands. It is actually quite natural but his doctor perscribed some medicine for the pain. his problem got a whole lot better and rarely ever uses his medication any more. the truth is, is that it is very natural

U may need to change the position of the thumb rest. Apart from that, I don’t know…

I use a neck strap when practicing to take some of the weight off the right hand. Talk to your teacher, because I’m sure that this is not an uncommon problem.
