I want an honest answer please as to if I should bother going back to college and earning a degree.

I am a 28 year old male in the California bay area and was going to San Jose State University until 2004 for a BS in Computer Engineering but due to mostly personal issues I was put on academic disqualification after failing a few classes and have since worked a fairly menial retail job where i earn barely enough to survive and don’t really have a chance for advancement, and besides I’m frankly sick of it.

Now I know some people would say don’t let anything stop you and go ahead and follow your dreams, but honestly is it practical or even feasible for me to try to get back into a four-year college and earn a degree? I’m still not really sure what I want to do with my life, and maybe it’s even too late to think I can get into some reasonably respectable or interesting job, or really make something of my life. Lately it seems harder and harder for me to focus on trying to learn something new or expand my horizons, and maybe I just don’t have the patience or brainpower to apply myself to “learning a trade” or what have you. Also like I stated before I’m on academic disqualification, but apparently I can apply for something called Academic Renewal that may be able to get me back into SJSU, but I took out quite a few loans while there and now am paying back a $17,000 debt slowly from each paycheck. There’s absolutely no way I could afford college unless I happened upon a sudden windfall of cash, got a much better paying PART TIME job (unlikely nowadays) or was able to somehow get loans/grants again.

Also, I’m not even sure if I want to stay in the same major if I DO go back, and to be honest I didn’t really complete much of the coursework geared towards my major so maybe it wouldn’t be too painful to change. I only went into Computer Engineering at the suggestions of my ex’s parents, and didn’t have a motive to do so really except that and the possibility of a decent (paying) career. I’m really not sure what I would want to go into now, I don’t have a real passion and am not particularly gifted in any one field (wanted to go into some sort of English/writing/journalistic position as my writing’s decent I feel but nothing really spectacular). I’m also thinking I would want to do something helpful for the world and others (though I’m somewhat of a misanthrope normally, tbh), maybe research into alternative energy (though I really have no idea what major would suit that best. Environmental studies?), or maybe dedicate myself to charity work or something. Again, I would LOVE to be able to feel dedicated to something for once but I’m really not sure if I have the follow-through. I’ve had lofty dreams of going into a career in astrophysics, as a professor with a research grant or something, but at my age and mental capability it’s probably not going to happen (to say the least).

Maybe it’s better just to count my losses and just try to get the best job I can with the education I have, or be happy with what I’ve got, regardless how pathetic it is (given this economy blah blah blah).I’ve already tried going to community college to take a prerequisite for my old major, but had registered too late and was unable to get into the class I wanted (Chemistry). Some of you, again, might say just throw caution to the wind and go for it, think positive thoughts, etc, but I need to be realistic. It’s a LOT of work, regardless of what I try to pursue if I DO go back to college, and frankly it may not even be possible at this late stage. It’s probably just a bad time for ANYONE to go back to college. I’m just feeling very frustrated with my life and position in it in general, and thirst for a change that will hopefully jumpstart my life in other areas. Any and all advice and suggestions in this regard would be very helpful, and I appreciate anyone taking the time to read and hopefully respond to this unnecessarily long rant. Thanks!

Just do it if you want to. Follow what you want or need to do.

No you can get specialist high paying jobs if you work as an apprentice sometimes. For instance a pyrotechnitian only needs to graduate high school and work an apprenticeship. My unkle was a high school drop out and currently is a FED ex air maintenance man.

If you go back to school you can defer your loan payments. However it sounds like you will need another loan in order to afford to go back to school? Students loans are difficult to get right now, especially if you have a limited income and already have several loans you’re paying off. If you can get a loan I would recommend going back to school. By the time you graduate hopefully the recession will be over, you’ll have your degree, you’ll be able to find a high-paying job, switch your loans off deferment, start paying them off again, and hopefully, be happy.

If you can’t get a loan then that’s your answer. Can’t pay for school, can’t go, no need to ask yourself if you should go back.

Good luck!

Well, lemme see-if I was your age and had all of this to deal with, I would either get a job that I could tolerate and go back to school on=line-medical profession is grueling, horrifying work, but there is a need and it pays really well-and you can get a degree (AD) in two years. You could go to night school, week-end school or do most of it on-line except for clinicals. Or, you could join the Peace Corps and see what’s really goin’ on and that might help direct you to a field that yoou might love. i made all the wrong choices, and I wish I had had someone like me in my corner to suggest these things. Some people come out of the womb(I swear) knowing exactly what they want to do! And then there are people like us that just don’t know exactly what to do with ourselves. Sometimes it takes a little longer. Don’t wait too long, before you take action. Time flies right on by, regardless of what you are doing at the moment. Good luck, you sound very capable of becoming just about anything you want to be. The hot jobs are still Information Technology and Nursing-IT is much cleaner and has much better hours than nursing and not so much BURN out. You will find your way…

yeah, if you can go back then do.
I went back to college for a year when I was too ill to work,
it was worth it, and I am still poor but I hope to get my degree somehow one day,
night school, online learning or full time if can get a loan, worth it,
and I know what you mean about learning getting more difficult, when you do menial work, as I have also had to, it can numb your brain and make you feel a bit dull, there is an online college called email college that offers free courses - not degrees or academic courses, just a lot of interesting courses for self development and brain sharpening, good fun.

Rest assure my friend. I am in EXACTLY the same position you are. From being disqualified from CSULB to not knowing what I want to be in life. I don’t know what major I should pursue. I only choose business because that is what my parents expected of me. I have been trying to make up my GPA by taken courses thru Open University but it is getting expensive. There are so many more obstacles a student has to endure when he/she is disqualified. And unfortunately, there are not many resources to go to. I do not have any advice to offer, just that I am in the same boat.

I just got disqualified form SJSU, was trying to major in electrical engineering for the same reason u were. I guess I’m gonna try to build up my GPA through open university. U should definitely try going back to college again and u probably feel rusty because u haven’t studied in a long time. Once, u start and get a hold of it, you will be back.
