What are some good children’s books?
I’m pregnant, and I wanted to know for future reference, and I’ve heard that if you read to the unborn baby, they can actually hear you.
Please post your favorite childrens books and suggestions.
Thank you :)

I think its important to keep the fairy stories and nusery rhymes going, so maybe try and find a big book of them. The Wild things is good! - Where the wild things are etc

Yeah :) The first one I ever read was Witches and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Fairy tales- not the disturbing versions! - but like little red riding hood, three little pigs etc, and then hans christian anderson has got books of good ones! ooh and the very hungry caterpillar- i loved that when I was little!
Yeah, I read it when I was a bit older xD thats why it didnt scare me that much.
Just go for books you liked when you were little
:) no problem! Maybe get books now that are colourful with lots of images so when they are ready they will enjoy looking at it/reading them- avoid pop up books when they are too little else they will just get ripped and torn! The Tiger who came to tea- is another popular one.
Yes paddington bear, and rupert bear, and winnie the pooh!
:) glad I could help! I quite like thinking of them all!!
On that note when I was little I also loved a book called chicken licken- I don’t know if its still available but that was really good!
There is also the beatrix potter books- peter rabbit, Jemima Puddle duck, tailor of gloucester- and many more

Anything by Dr. Seuss - the rhyme and rhythm he uses are loved by babies/toddlers and are actually quite fun to read out loud.
I’ve always loved Fairytales. Cinderella is my favorite. Peter Pan is full of action, makes your baby move as you move along the scenes. :) Winnie the Pooh at night time to keep you both at ease.
Sing to your baby as early as now. Their mama’s voice is the best music of all.
sleeping beauty was always a fav in our family

All these replies and I was WAITING for someone to finally mention Dr. Suess.
Green Eggs And Ham was my ultimate favorite, along with Are You My Mother?
Oh, and if you can get your hands on them (try eBay) find a children’s book series Little Golden Books. They have stuff like The Tawny Scrawny Lion, The Little Tugboat, etc. I had a stack of them when I was really young, and I still love them. (I’m still trying to hunt some down.)
Also, Puffin Books. They did a whole cascade of children’s books (I’m not sure if they’re still around) when I was a kid and I loved them probably more than The Little Golden Books
Oh, and Enid Blyton’s Magic Faraway Tree series. It’s extremely hard to get in Canada and the US, (copyright and publishing boundaries I think) but WELL worth it. You might be able to find them on eBay as well. However, Enid Blyton has a lot of other good books as well. Some of it is a little more for older kids, but I was reading them at a young age and loved them. I still have some.
wheels on the bus, there’s a few good versions of that.
The Princess and the Pea
The Ugly Duckling
Those are the two I know of the best. Classics.
anything by eric carle, like the hungry caterpillar
good night moon
if you feed a mouse a cookie
any dr seuss
the very hungry caterpillar (or something like that)
goodnight moon (already said but i third it)
velveteen rabbit
Um seeing as I read to my baby nearly 20yrs ago, I don’t think Ill be much good lol In their day it was Thomas Tank, Postman pat, and Umm Tales of the Riverbank, Sighhhh memories :D
All the good books are mentioned already. Devil_on_Earth, all you have to do is to go to a local library which has children’s section and there they will be happy to give you a printout of all the books which are recommended for children from babyhood to 18 years old. Any good library with kids’corners have section designed to appropriate age level: Ages 0 to 3; 3 to 6; etc. They have new mother’s programs with their babies, toddler programs etc. When my daughter was one year old, I signed her up to the library and every 2 weeks we brought home books. She is still going to the library and she is 18 now. Congratulations by the way, I read your previous post. You will be a wonderful mom, I can see! :-)
I have a Dr. Seuss book that was specifically meant to be read to the child In Utero. It’s call….gotta go look…..Oh, Baby, the Places You’ll Go!: A book to be read in Utero….well, I almost had it on my own, LOL. It’s wonderful and combines things from many of his other children’s stories, including Green Eggs and Ham, The Grinch who Stole Christmas, and Horton Hears a Who.
Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London had me, my h and and our older (between 5 and 10 yr old) child laughing hysterically. The pictures kept my brand new baby’s attention.
Sweetheart Safari (a precious moments story) was sweet.
I Love You, Good Night by Jon Buller is nice and introduces names of animals to babies
Love You Forever by Robert Munsch
I probably have close to two thousand books in my home. It was hard to narrow down the best ones. The first one on my list is REALLY good.
Oh, I forgot to say: Good luck with everything and congratulations!
the Zombie Survival Guide, by Max Brooks
srsly, get the n00b some beginners science books: little kids love planets, valcanoes, and other natural science stuff.
definitely the very hungry caterpillar
also ‘my naughty little sister’,'we’re going on a bear hunt’, ‘five minutes peace’, ‘little bear’,'each peach pear plum’ (more a visual) and ‘Hairy McClary’ ,found the link for one of the stories (http://www.murphsplace.com/crowe/charlie/hairy-story.html)
ah i loved children’s books
yeah well i think reading to your child at a young age really gets them off to a good start, it’s nice to see people still take the time to do it :)
ha no..i’m 17, but i had a nice up bringing, and although people change later on in life, your childhood determines who you are
yeah apparently it’s the same with phobias i heard, if your parents are scared of something and show it, then the child picks up on that and becomes scared of it as well
but that’s off topic :)
I am happy to here you are going to read to your baby. It is such a wonderful bonding time. Most of the book I would suggest have already been suggested. I would also add Shel Silverstein to the list. He has great children’s poetry and books.
Also, look for books that have basic pictures and the words for them. Like Ball. Then the first time your child looks at the picture and says the word, you and the your baby will be so excited.
I read to my children every night. Now at ages 10, 8, and 6 they all read themselves to sleep each night. Right now we are all reading the same series of books. (Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix) Then we discuss what we read. It is really wonderful to see their love of reading grow and know I was part of opening that for them.
Your world is about to become more wonderful then you can imagine. Congratulations!
I used to have a book that i cant remember the name of but the illustrations were cool and it had stories from around the world. Favorite one in it was a chinese story about a boy with a magic brush.
Devil_on_Earth wrote:
Thanks. I loved Shel Silverstein’s poems…”I’m being eaten by a boa constrictor..”:)
Too bad hes dead =(
big dog little dog
My favorites as a little kid were “The Big Red Barn” and “Leo, the Late Bloomer”. ‘Course, I’m also writing a children’s book right now to be considered in a contest. ^-^ If I win, I’ll suggest it to you.
I have written three children’s book that I have not tried to publish. One is called the Brownie Monster, How I lost my teeth, and Child of Light. Maybe one day I will try and publish them.
When you publish them babacup, please send a note to me where to read them. I’d love to read them, as I read tons of stories to my kids at school every day. Devil_on_Earth, just go to the library and you will discover gazillion more children’s books of your taste.
Idk if anyone has said this one yet, but “Good Night Moon” is a classic must have!

Yes! Dr. Seuss is awsome too. :) Especially “Green eggs and ham.”
An infant or toddler will love “Goodnight Moon”. While she’s in the womb though, she won’t need to learn/understand or follow your finger across the words. Read anything that is lyrical and lifts your own heart. We used to read Lewis Carrol.
maybe a little later… but redwall
redwall… and redwall…
hank the cow dog when i could read on my own…
umm… are you wanting ones you can read to them? cause even then, telling them stories that are good can come from a book children cant yet read, but might be able to understand.
- Fire
Shel Silverstein’s “A Light in the Attic”, “Where the Sidewalk Ends” and especially “The Giving Tree”
“Good Night Moon”! I really loved that book when I was little. ~In case you didn’t see what I had written earlier.
I know of good night moon and happen to have it with me like know.lol. but u can never go wrong with dr.seus. that is like the only book my mom read to me when i was little or i read to myself. but for starters as u know go with the simple abc and colors. and the blocks are tons of fun to play.
What i’d do which i have done is to go o barnes and nobles and sit and read them and choose a few.most impt is the music, when ur in the car choose a little light classical by bach, beethoven, and etc. childrens dvds. if perchance ur not a big fan of buying too many things its always free at the public library and let me tell u huge variety and selections.
know if you ave comcast get the noggin channel when ur baby gets lets say 7monthish.and as for when ur reading the books emphasise the words that are on the page that is depicted by the image eg RED apple. and also go with the flow use imagination by describing it a bit i hav a vivid imagination and am pretty good. ok i thinkk i went on too far and out of the box. o well toodles and good night
The Three Little Pigs - my favorite
Any fairytale book will be great too.
I love Dr. Seuss.
Alot of good one’s already said are good.
A crow named joe.
Such a cute book, my little sister LOVED that book :)
A brilliant children’s book is “The Little Prince.”
Brilliant. It’s the type of children’s book that has an obvious storyline, and also a much deeper meaning. It’s very unique and sweet. It’s originally French, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Make sure you get a translation including the original art, it’s very cute and dear.
I actually first read it as a teenager and LOVED it immediately, even though it’s written for young children. I just love the deeper message.
I hope your baby enjoys all these suggestions! And good luck to your family. =)

Some good series..
The Junie B. Jones series
The Chronicles of Narnia series
Sesame Street series
I Spy books
Berenstain Bears
The Puppy Place
I love buying books, but they can be very expensive. It would be a great idea to go to yard sales and garage sales. People sell books for a quarter that cost them ten or fifteen bucks. And sometimes you can find whole series that way.
Velveteen Rabbit
Hope for the Flowers
Little Prince —Someone had mentioned it. I think it’s a good book even for adults. I read it when i was in high school. Same goes with Hope for the Flowers and Velveteen Rabbit.
My youngest brother used to let me read him “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day.” He loved it. By the time he was over this book, I memorized it already. :)
Probably already been suggested, but:
Winnie the Pooh (A.A. Milne and modern versions)
Possum Magic
Diary of a Wombat
Stellaluna
Dr Seuss (they’re all awesome)
Those are some of my favourites. I still read Winnie the Pooh today :)
Mr. Popper’s Penguins
I was a favorite:)
I had to ask a friend and now I have to read it to my niece:)
Sans got my first 3 suggestions, great books, Silverstein was a genius.
How about “I’ll love you forever”, a young man reads to his ageing mother.
“The Big Ripe Strawberry, A brave mouse guards his strawberry, from a Big Hungry Bear! Oh I can hear the voices I used!
“Good Dog Carl” excellent series with nary a word. A Rottwiler baby-sits a baby, and does an excellent job of entertaining and tending baby! A must see!
‘i’ll love you forever’
‘i’ll love you forever i’ll like you for always as long as i’m living my baby you’ll be’
I read it to my boys, “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be” what an awesome message, glad some of you had the pleasure of reading it.

After my Mother-in-law passed away, my husband found this book at her house. Her husband said she was going to give it to my husband and never found the right time to give it to him. When he came home and showed it to me, we just cried. It still brings tears to my eyes when I think about it.
Hi Tigger,
Im doing good. Thanks for asking. Hope the same for you.
BabaCup, I say I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be, to my boys. All while growing up, and them making mistakes and wrongs, it was a way to let them know, that yes, you need to fix this, I am here and will stand by you because, “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be. It helped them know I will love them through thick and thin and good and bad, and that they can always tell me.
