You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
as opposed to past times?? you mean like the french revolution? the witch hunts across Europe?
i think it’s gotton pretty good considering the past.
yeah, but u don’t see those people needing counsleing or getting depressed….no, there were insane ppl, but how come only now does counseling and therapists come on the scene? and we have easy lives compared to back then….but we’ve also created other problems too I guess….
I don’t know that today is pretty good in comparison to the past because the past and the present have different problems, that may merit equal to or even greater misery. Basically the world has suffering; it’s impossible to really say why these atrocities occur, they just do. That seems to be the cruel, yet steady pathway of life.
Ahh…gotta love those underlying undertones of misery in everything, dontcha? ;-)

I agree, Science has illuminated the dark corners of the globe: now they are just visable as what they are.

there were, they were called witches and heretics and treated as such. Today science has given us insreased knowledge for diagnosis and treatment cababilities, therefore increasing rates of psychotherapy.
everything in life comes down to two things stuff you do for yourself and stuff you do for others. An they all overlap. Really though you have to figure out who you are and what you want to do. It’s impossible to think that we can all just change, people are stupid and stupid people will believe anything if they are told the right way. best thing to do is look out for your self, then look out for others, because it feels good.
why is there so much suffering in the world?
Socioeconomic disparity, plain and simple. If we could all have what we need to exist, we could all strive for what we need to be happy.

Because we’ve evolved. We have more understanding, we know more about how the mind works and how important mental health is.
I hear what your saying about “how hard” people had it “back than” but that doesn’t negate how difficult it is to live in the now. Before, you did what you had to do. It was clear, there was something to fight for. They had something to stand for. Something to live and die for.
Now what do we have? Choice. Everything. Everything under the sun. We could choose to do anything we want - and with that option in mind, why would we choose to do anything at all? Why should we work hard, we know we could just change our minds - just pick up and start over and go in a different direction. Why would we stick with any one thing? Choice is the cross we bear.

HA! I like you’re rather terse literal response. Oh, I also like it because I agree, of course. :-P

you gotta hand it to Marx for that notion, eh?
“Yes, yes I suppose you do,” is what I would say if I’d read Marx, but unfortunately, I haven’t.

Eric Fromm’s “Marx’s Concept of Man” is a great intro if you like that sort of thing

Usurper hit it right on the nose.
I hate choice. For example, I know life would be a lot easier if I HAD to hunt for food. I would think, I need food, I have a gun, I’ll go shoot a deer.
Now, I think, I have to have food. What kind of food? What brand? What grocery store do I go to? I need a job to make money for food. What job do I want? Do I need to go to school for it? Who do I want to work for?
It’s really a lot more going on in your mind.
Other than that, I would say it’s because the population is so much larger, and because we are medically advanced, making the people with problems seem like a larger group.
