mom help: I’m gonna post this again. - Help.com

I’m gonna post this again.

I’m really scared and sad.?

My mom just divorced my dad because he was abusive to all of us. My mom is going to change her last name back to her maiden one. She says that me(a 14 year old boy) and my 12 year old sister have to do the same. I don’t want to change my last name because it is very cool sounding. And plus nobody will know me by this name. It makes me feel very uncomfortable. I need help! It should be illegal to force your kid to change their last name. To me it’s very abusive. I’m gonna throw up.

You have the right to your own name. If you want to keep it then you keep it. It sounds like your mother has problems with anything to do with your father. If this is because of abuse then it might be understandable, but you are not obligated to do anything.

We understand that you don’t like it. I know it is very confusing right now, but later on down the road, you will. You really need to focus on your life, your school, your social life with friends and sports/activities. I know this is affecting you to the point where you can’t function normally, but change is going to take place and you have to brace for it. You’re a boy one day and have to grow and think and act like a man the next. It’s hard. It’s not fare. Nothing is ever really fare, but we have to adapt to change and make the best of what we have to work with. If not having a voice right now, later on you’ll make up for it. If you have a counselor at school, you should stop by his/her office and speak with them. This is not a time in your life where you should be dealing with this alone. You reached out to us, now please reach out to your counselor. From there they should know how to handle this and find ways to make you feel better. You’re doing the right thing by talking about it. Don’t stop.

I believe that in order for your mother to legally change your name she will have to go to court. If she does this the judge will speak to you and your sister to see how you feel about it. All you have to do is tell him your feelings and he will not allow the name change to go through.

Please consider what another person suggested and speak to a counselor. Divorce is a very difficult situation to deal with and there is help for you.
