Why do we help each other?

maybe it’s because we can correct the flaws and issues that we see in others when we feel helpless about our own problems, all to feel like we can make a difference somewhere even if we can’t help ourselves… but I’d like to think it isn’t so selfish.

such as? I’m help because it makes a difference to other people, and the world will never be perfect and everyone can’t be happy, but I can try to get it as close as I can. It’s late and I’m slightly depressed, and I heard about some reasoning that people can only love themselves recently. I think it was “people feel good about helping others. although it may not be the primary reason to help, it becomes a matter of self satisfaction.”

ur right regulus but it isnt something openly discussed or thought about

some people have overwhelming problems and a way to cope is to help others. it may seem genuine but in reality they help because it takes their minds of their worries so it is like a drug. it may seem selfish but in the end help goes around this way and like a circle continues forever.

i help because i like answering questions and finding solutions to problems so for me it is like a puzzle to try and solve. again i suppose i don’t help because i really want to but for entertainment or to pass time.

I guess I just wish the world was a bit warmer. people are so ready to flinch and run and defend, but hardly anyone can open up and completely accept a complete stranger into their hearts immediately if there is even a small possibility of a threat. I’m not saying “be best friends with that guy over there”, but I am saying that so many people today lack a deep emotional connection to other random people, regardless of ideals and personality. I find it sad.

I help cause I fought my battles and won. Now I fight for others. I hate depression, cutting, panic attacks, and broken hearts. If I can save someone a little pain and speed up their healing process then that makes me happy, that my shiit wasnt a waste of time.

that’s so sad. it really is a selfish matter if that’s true. but I really can’t think of another reason that involves self satisfaction in some way.
oh, and I didn’t men just for this site…

I dont think u could call it selfish, if you answer a post, giving your time and sharing experiences. I came on here with a problem. That was the only problem I have ever posted. I just come to help now. I have empathy for others. And in my heart know that others do too. I is lovely to be in a place… even if it is cyber… that has such lovely people on it.

I don’t understand what you find so sad about people helping themselves. Ultimately, we are the only ones who can fix our own problems, and it is a comfort to know that in doing so, we are not alone. To me, the sharing is a beautiful thing.

it’s not in the fact that we help ourselves, it’s in the fact that all things we seem to do for others, according to this, is essentially just a means of self satisfaction. I want something that I can do completely selflessly for others. I want to know that I do it because it’s right to do for everyone, and that’s impossible because I will always feel some kind of gratification from doing something from others, simply because I like doing it.
in essence, my real question is, can I do anything at all for anybody else without receiving any kind of gratification? I guess I just don’t trust myself to be a good person at times…
