Computer question; PCIe modes.
Please look at the specifications for this motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product...
The PCI-E x16 slots are listed as “1 x PCIe x16, 1 x PCIe x8/x16, 1 x PCIe x8″
What does ‘x8/x16′ mean?
My guess is that between the 3 PCIe slots, the mobo can support a total speed of x32. So if you have two PCIe x16 cards running in SLI/Crossfire, they will both run at a full x16, but if you have 3 such cards, they will be running at x16/x8/x8. So ‘x8/x16′ means that the second slot will run at x8 or x16, depending on the number of cards.
Is that correct? This is just my best attempt to figure it out. An internet search was fruitless.
If I’m right, then why is this motherboard advertised as ‘true 3-way SLI’, if it only runs at x16/x16 or x16/x8/x8? I would expect it to run at x16/x16/x16!
Thanks for any and all help.
Also, if you’d like to review my current build, before I buy, please go to:
