“Blond is not an option the best you can get is light brown…maybe. Tragically Jet black hair is the most difficult. Hair Color will not lift your hair color very much. You will have to use bleach and your best bet is to try it out first. Here’s how:
You will need to go to a beauty supply (Likehttp://www.sallybeauty.com) and purchase a few items. You need a packet of high lift bleach ( http://www.sallybeauty.com/Salon-Care… ), level 40 developer, a mixing bowl an application brush and gloves. You will also need a comb and aluminum foil but you might have those items at home. You want to choose a bleach that is blue because jet black hair will lift orange and the blue helps counteract that. A level 5 Ash Brown/Blond color. If you ask the store clerk she will be able to help you with this. A small bottle of level 20 volume developer. A super hydrating conditioner and moisturizing shampoo.
Once you get home mix one ounce of bleach to one and a half ounce of developer. DO NOT MIX IN A BOTTLE! Use the bowl.
Pin crown section of your hair up so that if this goes terribly wrong it will be somewhat hidden. Take a small section of your hair about 1/2 thick and a very narrow parting. This will be your test section. Fold the end of the foil over your comb and place it under the hair so that the hair is resting on top.
Apply a small amount of bleach to the ends (the bottom quarter of your hair.) Fold the foil up to cover the hair and wait ten minutes. Check the ends to see if there is any color change. Keep doing this every ten minutes but don’t leave it on for more than 40 mins and even that is a bit long. After 40 mins whatever color it is is the lightest it will get. Most likely won’t get to anything lighter than a brassy orange. Once you have determined the amount of time you need to lighten your hair apply it to your whole head one inch off the scalp. The last ten minutes apply it to your roots. (anything that is orange from your last dye job.) If you start on your roots the heat from your head will make them lighter than the rest of your hair. After the time is up Wash your hair out Do not condition. It will feel dehydrated and nasty but that is because you have stripped your hair of all the things that make it shiny. Now towel dry your hair getting most of the moisture out do not blow dry. You want your hair to be 50% dry or more. Mix the color according to the instructions. If there are not instructions asking the sales asscociate at Sally’s will also get you this answer. Usually it is one ounce to one ounce. Apply the color to your hair all over roots to ends and twist it up if your hair is long so that the ends are close to your scalp to get some of the heat and absorb the color a bit more evenly. Color timing varies but it is usually 30 mins. after the time is up rinse your hair and shampoo. Apply the conditioner liberally and leave it in your hair for thirty minutes or longer wraped up in a towel. Rinse the conditioner out and let your hair air dry. In about 2 months you can use the color you used on your roots with 30 Volum developer if your hair is dark or 20 if you are a medium brown. 2 months after that your hair might be in good enough condition to highlight it and give you some of the blond you are hoping for.
This whole process will cost you about $40-$60 and take 2-5 hours. At a salon you would be doing the same amount of time and paying approximately $75 an hour. Good Luck and don’t ever dye your hair black again.”
