Who is/was Gismonda?

Is she a historical figure or a mythological one? I know there is a play about her, but whenever I try to research the actual story, all that comes up on any search engine is Alfons Mucha’s painting of Sarah Bernhardt playing the role. If you have heard about this, please help to point me in the right direction!

I’ve tried with a z and still don’t get much of anything… Are there any other spellings?
