My bathroom light switch flips up to the on position without anyone touching it.

Any serious explanations without the mumbo jumbo? Has this happened to anyone else here? Thanks!

My car locks and unlocks itself. Maybe it’s some kind of electrical surge?

Maybe a mouse or someone in your house is doing it.

Try replacing the switch. I once had a light switch that was faulty, and you had to put more pressure down than up to operate it.

My wife was only a foot or two away when it did it the second time, no mouse, but thank you.

Thanks Sans, I have checked the pressure earlier, and it does take less pressure to turn on than off, but so do many of the switches. I thought also that it may only be halfway cut off, well before this last incident it was only half way off so I turned it off completely and it came on a short time later.

I intend to replace it, just very curious as to how it manages to flip up.

I’m not being funny here, Shakey. Mice do live in walls and can wreak havoc. I’ve had them chew through the wiring clean through on one of our sockets.

I have no idea. It could be the pull of the chords. Thats what it was with me. I built in my basement, and the electrical wires were short. It was pulling the switch up.

I believe it Aries, but this has happened 3 times and I have just checked behind the face plate and there is no sign of anything being in there. Before I change the switch, I want to do a little experimenting to see what could be causing it. To my knowledge there is no way turn on a switch other than flipping it, however I have heard of power surges doing some weird stuff. Thanks

Thank you, I looked inside the box and everything looks good, tomorrow I will probably take it out and look closer. The wires can’t actually flip the switch to my knowledge, because it will pull on the screws and not the handle its self.

I have the same problem - a switch in the basement has started to go ON by itself - I turn it off, go upstairs - an hour later I come down and the light is on and the switch is UP!

Much as I’d like to believe I might have a friendly ghost here, I have enough scientific knowledge to know that there is probably a practical explanation. Anyone know any more about this?

I agree pawsmusicpro. So what does your scientific knowledge tell you about why it does it?
