I know when I was first asked to do a lit review I had NO idea what to do. And when I asked about it, the lecturers couldnt give me an answer as to what the structure of one should be.

Basically it is like an essay with no limits. You should try to find all references in journals that relate to the topic that you are trying to review, and summarise their findings.

Not sure what the purpose of your review is, but usually you have to do this before u submit a proposal for research for honours or phd or masters. You are trying to find out if someone has already done the experiment and if so what did they find and what do you intend to do differently, or what gaps in their research do you intend to fill.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply. I understand what you are saying and my topic is ‘multiethnic environment is the best for teenagers to grow up’. Do you have any idea? Is it need to narrow down it? There are some question need to think before write the literature review:
• What is known about the subject?
• Are there any gaps in the knowledge of the subject?
• Have areas of further study been identified by other researchers that you may want to consider?
• Who are the significant research personalities in this area?
• Is there consensus about the topic?
• What aspects have generated significant debate on the topic?
• What methods or problems were identified by others studying in the field and how might they impact your research?
• What is the most productive methodology for your research based on the literature you have reviewed?
• What is the current status of research in this area?
• What sources of information or data were identified that might be useful to you?

Is it i need t follow this?

Yes, in your reply above, the list of things there, is exactly what you need to do.

In terms of gaps in the knowledge, it just means is there any work that hasnt been done yet.

As a really basic example, related to your topic, you might find there are articles that have researched the socio economic status of people that have come from multiethnic backgrounds, educational level reached, incidence of mental illness and then you realise noone has done work regarding incidence of crime, or nutrition, so you would point those things out as needing further work.

As your example say that there none has done work regarding incidence of crime or nutrition, and i need to point things out as neding further work…….How could i find from it? Is it mean that i need to find out by myself? By asking the people or surfing the web?
